Southwest DeKalb’s DeAvera Todd was the last gymnast to win the state all-around title from DeKalb in the 2004 state meet.

The Georgia High School Association first sponsored gymnastics as a state championship in 1956. DeKalb County Schools wasted little time in making an impact as Druid Hills won the first of 37 (20 girls, 17 boys) state titles held by county schools and the first boys’ title.

Since that time the county has brought home 245 individual state titles (130 boys, 115 girls), including 38 all-around titles (24 girls, 14 boys). The county has produced 41 state champs (23 boys, 18 girls) with two or more state title wins.

Boys’ History

DeKalb captured 17 titles in 32-year history of boys’ gymnastics

The 17 boys’ titles consisted of all the officially sanctioned state championships held over a 32-year period beginning in 1956 and running from 1964 to 1979. The sport was discontinued in 1987.

Sequoyah won four consecutive state titles from 1969 to 1972 to tie with Briarcliff who won in 1974 and 1977 to 1979.

DeKalb County Schools also brought home the all-around title 14 of the 17 years. Druid Hills’ Jimmy Vickery won the first all-around title in 1956. Lakeside’s Jeff Morrison (1973 to 1974) was the only two-time all-around state champ from the county. Chuck Bremberg of Sequoyah won the title in 1970 to start a string of nine consecutive all-around titles brought home to DeKalb County Schools, including the 1971 and 1972 titles won by his Sequoyah teammates Mike Gilreath (1971) and Bobby Seale (1972).

Lakesides’ Morrison also holds the boys’ record for most individual titles winning eight from 1973 to 1974. Sequoyah’s Bremberg follows with 6 and Druid Hill’s Vickery with 5.
