The Tucker Tigers won their second consecutive Region 4-6A boys’ basketball title on Saturday 64-60 over the hot shooting hosts Lovejoy Wildcats to help give DeKalb County three region titles on the day.

Southwest DeKalb swept the Region 5-5A girls’ and boy’s titles on Saturday night at Arabia Mountain.

Tucker used balanced scoring to overcome a Lovejoy squad that hit nine three-pointers in the first half on its home floor.

Three Tucker players hit double figures in the game lead by Jermontae Hill with 19 points. David Giddens hit for 15 and Terrance Edwards who had 31 in the semifinal win on Friday added 12.

Tucker is the No. 1 ranked team in Class 6A and improved to 24-3 on the season and goes into the state playoffs with the No. 1 seed out of the region. Lovejoy fell to 17-9.

Stephenson swept the 4-6A boys’ and girls’ consolation games to earn No. 3 seeds heading into the state tournament beginning on Friday.

The Lady Jaguars (19-9) downed Mt. Zion (17-10) 51-47 in the girls’ game to get the better seed. The Jaguars (17-10) made it a sweep with a convincing 65-49 win over Morrow (15-13) in the boys’ contest. Edwin Walker had 29 points to lead the Jaguars in the win.

Region 5-5A
Southwest DeKalb claimed both titles at the Region 5-5A Tournament on Friday at Arabia Mountain.

The Lady Panthers (21-6) knocked off host Arabia Mountain (22-5) for the third time this season on the way to winning the Region 5-5A girls’ championship.

Southwest DeKalb (16-12) pulled away from a 17-16 halftime lead on the way to a 49-37 win over Columbia (16-11), which had defeated No. 1 ranked Lithonia in the semifinals on Frida, to complete the sweep.

The Columbia Lady Eagles (15-9) picked up the No. 3 seed in girls’ play with a 49-17 win over Lithonia (9-16) in the girls’ consolation game to open the night.

A 65-59 overtime win by the Miller Grove Wolverines (19-10) gave the Lithonia Bulldogs (24-3) their second consecutive loss for the first time this season to grab the No. 3 seed on the boys’ side.

State tournament play begins on Friday (Feb. 14, girls) and Saturday (Feb. 15, boys) at home sites of the higher seeded teams.
