Tough defense like the Silver Streaks show here led to their 12-6 win over previously undefeated Gwinnett.

The DeKalb Silver Streaks wheelchair handball team got the season off to a roaring start defeating previously undefeated Gwinnett Heat 12-6 in their season opener last week (Sept. 23).

Winning the game was a big team effort by the Silver Streaks to win on the Heat’s home floor at Hull Middle School using tough team defense and getting scoring opportunities.

Freshman Najee Smothers (Grayson) with help from his teammates on offense scored all 12 goals for the Silver Streaks (1-0) in handing the Heat (2-1) their first loss of the season. Gwinnett opened the season with wins over the Clayton Eagles and West Georgia Wolverines.

Sophomore Cameron Smothers (Grayson), older brother to Najee, came up big in goal for the Silver Streaks holding Gwinnett to just six scores in the game with the aid of his teammates out front.

King James McMurry (Stone Mountain H.S.), Joe Patterson (Laurel Ridge Elementary), Jamell Boston (Cedar Grove M.S.), Will Jones (Druid Hills M. S.), Nusarai Quarels (Druid Hills H.S.) and Justice Smith (Academy for the Blind) round out the Silver Streaks that contributed to the win.

The Silver Streaks go on the road again on Saturday to face the West Georgia Wolverines at LaGrange High School with the game set for 11:00 am.
