The GHSA State Golf Tournaments begin today (Monday, May 22) at various sites around the state and DeKalb County is well represented with two teams and three individuals competing for state honors over two days.

The Class 5A Girl’s State Tournament is set for Calhoun’s Fields Ferry Country Club with the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs hitting the course to compete at state for the second consecutive year. Chamblee qualified for the state tournament by finishing as the Area 3-5A runners-up with a team score of 311 behind Cartersville (296).

Catherin Hanson led the way with a 90 to finish third individually in the Area Tournament back in April. Sophie Li finished in sixth place with a 109 and is making her third consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Julie Mansour finished tied for ninth with a 112 to round out the tournament for Chamblee.

The Lady Bulldogs stepped up earlier this year after having to go to the State Sectional before qualifying for state a year ago. Chamblee won the DeKalb County Championships in mid-April.

Chamblee also has one Bulldog playing in the Class 5A Boys’ State Tournament at Cartersville Country Club in Cartersville over these two days. Dylan Lawson shot a 79 and finished 11th overall to be the top qualifier on a non-state qualifying team to get into the individual field.

CLASS 6A STATE TOURNAMENT
The Dunwoody Wildcats moved on to the Class 6A State Sectional at Villa Rica and finishing fourth in their Area 3-6A Tournament in Flowery Branch in April.

The team shot a 320 score to get the sectional qualifying spot four strokes behind Riverwood led by Jackson Madden with a 77 and Caden Smith with a 79. Bradley Stone finished with an 81 and Braeden Rice scored an 83 to round out the scoring.

The Wildcats moved on to the Class 6A State Sectional at Mirror Lake Golf Club in Villa Rica to compete with seven other teams for four state qualifying spots.

Led by senior Braeden Rice’s one over par 73 the team clipped Woodward Academy by one stroke 310-311 for the final state qualifying spot. They also won by 30 strokes over Riverwood who had finished four strokes ahead at the Area 3-6A Tournament.

Joining Rice (tied for fifth) with scores under 80 were Caden Smith and Bradley Stone who tied for 16th overall as both carded a six-over par 78. Jackson Madden rounded out the team score for Dunwoody with an 81 to tie for 22nd in the State Sectional.

The Wildcats are playing at Jekyll Island over the next two days as they compete for team and individual honors in the Class 6A State Tournament.

On the girls’ side the Dunwoody Lady Wildcats also finished fourth at the Area 3-6A Golf Tournament with a team total of 297 to earn a spot in the Class 6A Girls’ State Sectional at Villa Rica.

Amelia Mutert led the way with a 91 to take eighth place overall and Cora Webster came in with a 98 to finish 11th. Madeline Viccine shot a 108 to round out the scoring for the Lady Wildcats.

Dunwoody came up short of qualifying for state in the sectional dropping down to a 310 team score and 15 strokes out of a qualifying spot.

Amelia Mutert shot a 97 at the sectional to pick up one of the two individual qualifying spots after finishing 11th overall in the standings. Mutert is playing at Jekyll Island over the next two days to compete for individual state honors.

CLASS 2A STATE TOURNAMENT
Redan’s Dominique Blocker qualified for the Class 2A Girls’ State Golf Tournament as an individual out of the Area 2-2A Tournament held on May 3 at Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge.

Blocker is the first girl from Redan to qualify for state in the history of the program. She is playing at the Okeefenokee Country Club in Blackshear over the next two days.
