The Southwest DeKalb Panthers wrestling team won five State Sectional Wrestling titles (4 boys, 1 girl) and is part of a contingent of 34 DeKalb County wrestlers competing in the GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Tournament in Macon starting today (Thursday, 2/16/23).

Southwest DeKalb’s “Four Horsemen” of Jayden Hammonds (138), Dharrin Smith (157), Jerrel Baskins (175) and Isaiah Scott (215) all won state sectional titles in their respective weight classes. They have currently wrestled their way to the Class 4A state finals in Macon today.

Hammonds (28-2) defeated Miller Grove’s Tyrone Williams (31-7) by fall (1:59) and West Lauren’s Aiden Ingram (16-4) to reach the championship match set for tomorrow around 6:00 pm. He matches up with Braydon Bower (58-9) of Troup.

Smith (25-2) won 10-3 over Gareth Aderhold (30-14) of Walnut Grove and Joey Carew (43-7) of North Hall to advance to the finals where he meets Troup’s Tim Dunn (43-7).

Baskins (23-0) knocked of Northwest Whitfield’s Daniel Soto (32-10) 8-3 and followed up with a 12-2 major decision over North Oconee’s Louden Schnake (21-10). He takes on Heritage of Catoosa’s Evan Wingrove (47-3) in the championship match.

Two DeKalb County girls’ wrestlers hope to meet in a championship match for the third time this year in the GHSA State Wrestling Tournament this weekend. Scott (30-0) won by fall (0:34) over North Hall’s Kade Hawthorne (29-13) and pulled out a tough 2-1 victory over Lovett’s Aiden Kaufman (32-7). The championship match pits Scott against Walnut Grove’s Parker Warren (44-6).

Eighteen more DeKalb wrestlers hit the mats tomorrow including Dunwoody’s Adam Gromatzky second in Class 6A Sectional at 160; Malik Conley of Arabia Mountain, second in Class 5A Sectional at 157 and Columbia’s Thawbaan As-Siddiq, third in Class 2A Sectional at 126.

Four girls are included in that 18 including Sectional winner Cassidy Gibson of Southwest DeKalb and runner-up Say Paw of Stone Mountain. Gibson became the first DeKalb girl to win a state sectional title with her defeat of Stone Mountain’s Paw. Paw had won their Area championship match the week prior to sectionals.
