Champion, Salem teams set for battle atop the Region 2 standings in boys’ and girl’s middle school basketball play.

A big girls’ and boys’ doubleheader is set for at Champion as the hosts and Salem all come into the meeting on Saturday (Jan. 14) undefeated with the Region 2 lead up for grabs.

Salem (8-0, 7-0) the reigning girls’ middle school champs remained undefeated with a 60-3 win over Tucker (1-7, 1-6) on Wednesday night. Shanya Heath led the way with a game-high 19 points followed by Mya Perry with 16 and DeDe Spaulding with 10. Salem also won last Saturday 53-13 over Lithonia (2-7, 2-6) as the duo of Heath and Perry scored 20 points each in the victory.

Champion (8-0, 7-0) set up the meeting by winning last Saturday before a night off on Wednesday via a 29-16 win over Beacon Hill (6-2, 6-1). Charmaine Owens spurred the Lady Chargers to the win with 13 points. Jhia Primrose added 5 points and 4 rebounds.

It is the first meeting since Salem knocked off the previously undefeated Champion in the finals of the county championship last February.

The boys’ game also features both teams at 8-0 overall and 7-0 in Region 2 action. The host Chargers were off on Thursday following a 49-34 victory over Beacon Hill (4-5, 4-4) on Saturday. Carlin Cabbil was the catalyst on offense hitting for a game-high 22 points. Jackson Usery, Rance McKenzie and Akil Robinson keyed the pressure defense for the Chargers.

Salem remained undefeated in Region 2 action with wins over Lithonia (46-39) and Tucker (48-25) to set up the battle of the two undefeated teams on Saturday. The Lions (8-0, 7-0) opened the second half of the season with the win over Lithonia (7-2, 6-2) behind a 19-point performance by D. White. Lithonia’s late push came up short as Anthony Flournoy scored 9 points and Jayshon Smith added 8. N. Benford had a solid night with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in Salem’s Wednesday night win over the Tucker Tigers (1-7, 1-6).

GIRLS RECAPS (Wednesday, Jan. 11)
Chapel Hill 44, McNair 2
A balanced attack by the Chapel Hill Lady Panthers (7-1, 7-0) pushed them to a 44-2 win over the McNair Lady Mustangs (0-8, 0-7). Mauri Barnes had a game-high 11 points while Janise McCoy (4 assists, 4 steals), Avantey Gilreath (8 rebounds) and Sanai Bryant (4 steals) hit for 8 points each. McKenzie Copeland chipped in 7 points (4 steals).

Bethune
The Bethune Lady Lions (6-2, 5-2) opened the New Year with three wins over the past week to move into a third-place tie with Druid Hills in Region 1. Bethune won 40-14 over Miller Grove (1-7, 1-6) on Wednesday to cap the three-game run after a makeup game win of 26-14 over Columbia last Thursday and a 30-15 win over Stone Mountain on Saturday.

BOYS RECAPS (Wednesday, Jan. 11)
Bethune 37, Miller Grove 28
Bethune (7-1, 6-1) moved into a three-way tie in the Region 1 standings as the Lions knocked off Miller Grove (3-5, 3-4) 37-28 on Wednesday night. Mekyrius Miller fueled the win with a game high 20 points and Ke’Shawn Briggs added 8 points.

Chapel Hill 51, McNair 19
The Chapel Hill Panthers (6-2, 6-1) are in a three-way tie in the Region 1 standings following a 51-19 win over McNair (1-7, 1-6) behind double-figure scoring from three players. Just Taylor finished with 12 points followed Keshawn George with 11 and Nazir Morgan with 10.

GIRLS RECAPS (Saturday, Jan. 7)
Stephenson 44, Columbia 12
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars (8-0, 7-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 44-12 win over Columbia (4-5, 2-5) on Saturday. Loriel Murray had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to key the win while adding 3 blocked shots. Jayla Walton added 9 points (8 steals, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and Cyncere Sims-Turner contributed 8 points.

Druid Hills 50, McNair 4
Druid Hills (6-2, 5-2) forged a three-way tie in Region 1 with its 50-4 win over McNair (0-8, 0-7). The Dragons got an impressive 26-point performance from Azelia Shell in the win.

Bethune 49, Stone Mountain 33
Bethune ( 7-1, 6-1) kept pace with Druid Hills in the Regin 1 standings with a 49-33 win over Stone Mountain (2-5, 1-5). Mekyrius Miller hit for 13 points to lead the way while Rashaad Silver added 10 points and 9 rebounds and Keshawn Briggs added 7 points.

Peachtree 27, Tucker 22
The Peachtree Lady Patriots (3-6, 3-5) picked up their third win of the season in a tough 27-22 win over the Tucker Lady Tigers (1-7, 1-6). Tucker got 14 points from Iyonna Irvin and 7 points from Kayla Bradley in the loss.

Redan 32, Freedom 28
The Redan Lady Raiders (5-4, 5-3) pulled out a tough 32-28 win over the Freedom Lady Rams (2-6, 2-4) in Region 1 action on Wednesday. Aubri Brooks scored 13 points for Redan while teammates Koryonia Magee and Saniya Gist chipped in 8 points apiece. Grace Kasongo had a big night for Freedom with 16 points and 7 rebounds while Destiny Swint added 10 points and 3 assists.

Cedar Grove 20, Henderson 9
Cedar Grove (6-3, 5-3) solidified a current fourth place standing in Region 2 with a 20-9 win over Henderson (3-6, 2-6). Conner Hall provided pressure down low in the paint to go with her 5 points and 5 rebounds in the game.

BOYS RECAPS (Saturday, Jan. 7)
Redan 51, Freedom 30
Redan (8-1, 7-1) stayed one game up in the win column atop the Region 1 standings with a 51-30 win over Freedom (3-5, 3-4) on Saturday. Tristan Mitchell (16 points) and Amare Medhin (13 points) were both in double figures for the Raiders. De’Erick Cole added 8 points and 11 rebounds and Brandon Armstrong chipped in 8 points.

Druid Hills 42, McNair 24
Druid Hills (7-1, 6-1) knocked off McNair (1-7, 1-6) 42-24 to remain in the race for the top spot in Region 1. Stone Richards knocked down 31 points for the Dragons in the win.

Peachtree 49, Tucker 46
The Peachtree Patriots (3-6, 3-5) won a tight 49-46 contest over the Tucker Tigers (1-7, 1-6). Holden Verlander was the top Patriot with 13 points and Mason Scharf added 12. Vance Wilder had a game-high 16 points for Tucker and Sterling Pritchett added 11.

Cedar Grove 36, Henderson 22
The Cedar Grove Saints (6-3, 5-3) moved into fourth place in Region 2 following a 36-22 win over the Henderson Cougars (2-6, 1-6) last Saturday. Tayson Blunt keyed the win with 17 points (4 steals) while King Parrom and Isaiah Cosby combined for 16 rebounds.

Bethune 35, Columbia 22
The Bethune Lions (7-1, 6-1) opened the second half of the season with a 35-22 win over the Columbia Eagles (0-9, 0-8). Rashaad Silver led the way with 12 points and Deshawn Young added 8. Phamethius Mosley hit for 9 points and Cy’Mun Yeates added 7 for the Eagles. This was a makeup game played on Thursday, January 5.
