It was a tough day on the tennis courts for three local DeKalb tennis teams in the state quarterfinals round as the Dunwoody Wildcats and Lady Wildcats and the Lakeside Vikings all had their seasons end on Thursday.

The Lady Wildcats (15-5) hosted the Lambert Longhorns and fell 3-1 with the only victory coming at No. 1 doubles in the Class 7A girls’ quarterfinal round.

Dunwoody’s Ginny Duffy and Mei Stafford were down 2-3 in the opening set against Sydney Winters and Riley Abellana in the doubles match. They rallied to win the set 6-4 and then took the second set 6-3 to give Dunwoody its only point of the match.

Sarah Rock at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles duo of Celia Carter and Hannah Price fought in tight first set losses before falling in two sets on their respective courts.

Rock was up 5-4 in the opening set before falling 5-7 to fall behind a set to Lambert’s Angie Golban. Golban went on to win the second set 6-1 to close out the match.

Carter and Price fell behind 0-2 in the opening set and climbed back into the match taking a 3-2 lead only to have Lambert’s Madi Abellana and Sophia Zhao rally to win 7-6 by taking the tiebreaker.

A tough match at No. 1 singles had Lambert’s Mara Opre’ holding off Dunwoody’s Sophia Chiverton for a 6-4, 6-3 win to clinch the final team score of 3-1.

BOYS: West Forsyth 3, Dunwoody 0
West Forsyth knocked the Dunwoody Wildcats out of the Class 7A state playoffs with a 3-0 victory at the Vermack Swim and Tennis Center in Dunwoody on Thursday.

West Forsyth took both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles points. Dunwoody’s Mark Romano battled at the No. 1 singles falling 6-4, 6-3 and Bobby Kitchin tried to battle back from a 1-6 loss in the first set at No. 2 singles before dropping the second set 6-3.

The match was clinched as Dunwoody’s Jake Callahan and Andrew Munn fell at No. 2 doubles by a score of 3-6, 1-6.

Dunwoody finished 13-4 on the season.

Both Dunwoody squads won their Region 7-7A titles.

Cambridge 3, Lakeside 0
The Lakeside Vikings excellent 15-3 season ended in the same round and to the same opponent as Cambridge ousted them 3-0 at DeKalb Tennis Center on Thursday.

Cambridge swept the three singles matches and were up a set in both doubles matches when the match was halted.

Cambridge’s Mason Harmon defeated Lakeside’s Sam Fournier 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for one match point for Cambridge. Leon Mattheaus won the No. 2 singles match with Luca Borisov 6-2, 6-0 and Maurice Matthaeus upended Lakeside’s Andy Moehlich 6-1, 6-1 to seal the win.

Lakeside finished the season as the Region 4-6A champions.
