The Lakeside Vikings and Lady Vikings tennis teams both advanced to the Class 6A State Tennis Sweet 16 with wins over Richmond Hill on Tuesday afternoon at the DeKalb Tennis Center.

A 4-0 win by the Vikings (14-2) over Richmond Hill sets up a match on Thursday at DeKalb Tennis Center at 4:00 pm with Wheeler, a 3-0 winner over Winder-Barrow.

The Vikings got the win started by sweeping the two doubles matches in quick fashion. Julian Santucci and Wynnton Martin were a perfect 6-0, 6-0 over Richmond Hill’s Nick Ramos and Luis Gonzalez at No. 1 Doubles to get the first point.

The team of Jay Jani and Shaan Jani followed next with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Richmond Hill’s Will Cox and Nick Daly at the No. 2 doubles slot.

Luca Borisov took No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1 over Richmond Hill’s Cedric Yang and Sam Fournier captured the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Alex Krompak of Richmond Hill to close out the match.

Lakeside’s No. 3 singles player Andy Moehlich was up 6-1, 5-0 when Lakeside clinch the match.

The girls’ match involved a bit more drama as the final two matchups (No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles) had to go to third sets with Lakeside needed just one victory and Richmond Hill needed to sweep the final two matches to get the win.

Lakeside’s Johanna Goebel put together a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Jordyn Bausch and the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Elder and Hailey Pierce swept their match 2-0 by scores of 6-1 and 6-1 to give Lakeside a 2-0 lead.

Richmond Hills cut the lead to 2-1 as Emma Theriault won 6-1, 6-0 over Lakeside’s Emily Ellingson at No. 2 singles.

Lakeside’s Nora Grady fell 1-6 in her opening set at No. 3 singles and battled back for a 6-4 win in the second set to even her match with Cayley Hall.

Meanwhile Richmond Hill’s Emily Colbert and Sarah Hunt roared back from a 6-4 opening set loss at No. 2 doubles to knot the match at one set apiece with a 6-4 win over their own against Lakeside’s Maggie Bell and Audrey Bender.

A misunderstanding of the tiebreaker rule had the doubles line up for a 10-point tiebreaker won 10-5 by Lakeside giving the Lady Vikings an apparent win. A check of the guidelines for the state playoffs showed they had to play a full set to break the tie.

This put both the No. 3 singles (Grady vs. Hall) and the No. 2 doubles back on the court to decide the match as the two matches were both 1-1.

Grady completed her comeback from a set down to claim the victory with a 6-1 win over Hall to seal the playoff victory for the Lady Vikings. The No. 2 doubles was 3-2 in favor of Lakeside’s Bell and Bender when the match was clinched by Grady.

In other Class 6A state playoff action, Tucker dropped its matches to Statesboro. Tucker fell 1-4 in the boys’ match and 0-5 in the girls’ match to bring their seasons to an end.
