Seven teams off to hot 3-0 starts led by both Miller Grove teams as middle school basketball heads into Week 3.

Three games into the 2019-20 DCSD middle school basketball season the boys’ and girls’ teams at Miller Grove are both 3-0 heading into play on Wednesday (today).

The Lady Wolverines (3-0, 1-0) won both games last week with victories over Redan (0-2, 0-1) 32-30 in Region 3 play and a region crossover 45-9 victory over Region 4’s Cedar Grove (0-2, 0-1).

Lindsey Myles scorched the nets for 21 points and was joined in double figures by Brooklyn Scrubb in the win over Cedar Grove. Zaniyah Arnold contributed nine in the win. Jah’naesia Spiers had 5 points and 4 rebounds in the loss for Cedar Grove.

Miller Grove (3-0, 1-0) completed the sweep on both nights as the Wolverines defeated Redan (0-2, 0-1) 40-31 in Region 3 action and rolled to a 52-20 win over Cedar Grove (1-1, 1-0) on Saturday.

Marion Hopkins was the big story in the win over Redan as put together a double-double of 2 points and 10 rebounds in the win. JaKharre Barnes added 4 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists and 3 steals in the game.

The scoring was more balanced in the win over Cedar Gove as Trevian Callaway hit for 10 points and had six assists to lead the way. Hopkins added 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks to go with 9 points from Jonathan McBride and 8 from Rayshun Williams.

Girls Recaps
Tucker’s Lady Tigers are also 3-0 on the season behind the play of Malaya Jones who put up over 30 points in Tucker’s wins over Sequoyah (0-2, 0-1) 54-5 and Champion (0-2, 0-1) 49-14. Jones hit for 34 points against Sequoyah and then 37 in the win over Champion. Kristan Simmons added 10 points in the victory over Sequoyah.

Freedom has jumped out to a 3-0 record to start the season as well with a week’s sweep of Columbia (0-3, 0-1) 28-24 and Bethune (0-2) 39-26. Kyhra Thompson is leading Freedom hitting for 22 points against Columbia and 21 in the win over Bethune. Jasmin Adams had 8 points and Jamiya Jenkins 6 against Bethune.

Chamblee’s Lady Bulldogs were off on the opening night, but have won their first two games to go to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 1. Chamblee defeated Druid Hills (2-1) 36-17 and Henderson (1-2, 0-1) 32-15. Mackenzie Cassidy hit for 12 points in the win over Druid Hills while Chamblee got six point each from Trinity Walls, Alana Azeta and Sophia Wang in the game.

Chapel Hill also improved to 3-0 on the season with two wins last week. The Lady Panthers (3-0, 2-0) knocked off Cedar Grove 34-19 and Columbia 48-23 to pick up a pair of Region 4 victories. Shaniya Lewis had 4 points and 5 rebounds in the loss for Cedar Grove.

Boys Recaps
The Columbia Eagles (3-0, 1-0) swept their two games last week to remain undefeated to open the season with wins over Chapel Hill (1-2, 0-2) 60-47 and Freedom (1-2) 56-32. Columbia opened last week with the win over Freedom led by Sanchez Brown with 17 points and Joshua Mickell with 11.

A week ending win over Chapel Hill for the Eagles’ first region win was led by Jarmarcus Hunter with 22 points and Sanchez Brown with 15. Quavontae Morris collected 10 rebounds in the game.

Stone Mountain has rolled to a 3-0 start as well including wins over Peachtree (1-1) 39-32 on Wednesday and a big Region 2 win over Stephenson (1-2, 0-2) 56-47. Jahki Howard hit for 19 points (2 dunks) to go with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists in the win over Peachtree. Tristen Batten added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Howard led the way again in the win over Stephenson with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists to go with 11 points, 4 assists and 3 steals from Malik Hinton.

Peachtree picked up a win on Saturday downing Druid Hills (2-1) in a tight 49-47 victory on Saturday led by McKile Wells with 22 points.

Druid Hills had opened the season 2-0 with a Wednesday night 42-33 win over the Chamblee Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0) led by Josiah Lawson’s double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds and 8 points and 6 rebounds from Josiah Marsh.

Tucker (1-2, 1-0) got its first win of the season taking down Sequoyah 57-4. Sequoyah’s Cameron Andoh pulled down an amazing 23 rebounds in the game.

Henderson (1-2, 0-1) got its first win of the season 51-34 over Lithonia (0-3, 0-1) last Wednesday led by Chris Jackson’s double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Grant Webb chipped in 13 points in the win.

Champion (2-0, 1-0) swept its two games last week to get the Crusaders season off to a good start. The Crusaders took wins over Stephenson 49-30 in Region 2 and 44-10 over Tucker.
