The Lakeside Lady Vikings had to sweep all three singles matches to win a highly contested 3-2 victory at Woodward Academy on Wednesday afternoon to advance in the Class 6A girls’ state tennis playoffs.

Rowan Sconce got the win at No. 1 singles for Lakeside (15-1) in one of the easier matches of the day by defeating Terry Brantley 6-0, 6-1.

Woodward picked up wins in a three-set battle at No. 1 doubles as Camilla Robinson and Keira Turnley bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the first set two win 6-1, 6-2 to take the match. Tay Hendley and Sibley Winter combined for a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over the Lakeside duo of Emily Ellingson and Caroline Chrystall at No. 2 doubles.

Johanna Goebel dropped the opening set of her No. 2 singles match against Woodward’s Kai Turnley by a score of 5-7. She bounced back with a 7-5 win of her own in the second set and then blew away Turnley 6-0 in the final set for the win to even the match at 2-2.

Woodward’s Shanthi Bernard pushed Nora Grady to three sets at No. 3 singles after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4). Bernard evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. Grady rebounded for a 7-5 third-set victory to clinch the match.

Lakeside moves on to take on Roswell on Friday at 10:00 am in another road playoff match for a shot of reaching the semifinals.

Class 5A Girls
Northview 3, Chamblee 0
Down a player and a completely rearranged lineup the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs saw their run in the Class 5A state playoffs come to an end in a 3-0 home loss to Northview on Thursday.

Chamblee finished 10-7 on the season with the Elite Eight appearance.

The Lakeside and Dunwoody boys remain in Class 6A state playoffs with home matches on Monday. Lakeside (14-2) hosts the defending state champion Johns Creek squad at DeKalb Tennis Center on Monday at 3:30 pm. Dunwoody (12-8) plays host to Blessed Trinity at 12:00 pm at Dunwoody.

The Dunwoody Lady Wildcats (11-8) also reached the Class 6A Elite Eight and host Pope at 3:00 pm at Dunwoody on Monday.

The Chamblee Bulldogs (13-3) look for a semifinal berth as they host Centennial in a 1:00 pm Class 5A boys’ match at Chamblee on Monday.
