Southwest DeKalb led the charge for DeKalb County in the GHSA Traditional State Boys’ Wrestling Championships last weekend with a 12th place finish overall and a repeat state champion.

The Panthers had three wrestlers place at state led by Isaiah Scott. Scott captured his second consecutive 215 class gold medal by knocking off fellow DeKalb foe, Romando Craddock of Stephenson via an 8-4 decision in the championship match on Saturday.

Scott (19-1) had won by fall in his first two matches against Central-Carroll’s Ty Brewer (3:19) and Northwest Whitfield’s Landon Phillips (2:00) to reach the finals. Craddock had reached the title match with wins over North Hall’s Kade Hawthorne (9-4) and Southeast Whitfield’s Joseph Morales (6-4, sudden victory 1).

Southwest DeKalb’s Amir Ferguson picked up the bronze in the 285 class. Ferguson (25-5) lost a tough tiebreaker match to Perry’s Donovan Fusch in the championship semifinals and dropped into the consolation bracket. Ferguson defeated Burke County’s Veunte Gross with a 4-1 decision in the consolation semis. He then went on to defeat Hardaway’s Da’Various Jessie with a 6-4 decision to capture the bronze medal.

Malik Colquitt (26-6) scored 13 points for the Panthers with his sixth-place finish in the 150 class. He had reached the championship semifinals before dropping a match to Central-Carroll’s William White to drop into the consolation bracket.

Stephenson’s Badesire Labala (32-5) added 12 points with his sixth-place finish to aid the Jaguars’ 19th place team finish in the standings. He had reached the championship semifinals before dropping a match to J.T. Bowers of West Laurens.

Miller Grove finished in a tie for 28th with 12 points provided by Tyrone Williams’ sixth-place finish at 144. He had reached the championship semifinals before dropping a tough 5-4 decision to Holden Church of Central-Carroll.

Druid Hills was tied for 30th in the Class 4A standings with 10 points provided by Deonte Smith’s (28-4) sixth place at 120. Smith was injured and had to withdraw during his consolation semifinal match. He had reached the championship semifinals before dropping a match to Oliver Webb of Southeast Whitfield.

CLASS 2A
DeKalb picked up a pair of sixth-place individual finishes in the Class 2A State Championships.

Columbia finished 24th overall in the team standings led by a sixth-place finish by Thawbwan As-Siddiq at 144. As-Siddig reached the championship semifinals before falling Paxton Legatt of Union County.

Towers finished 30th in the team standings on the back of John Griffin’s sixth-place finish at 138. Griffin wrestled his way into the championship semifinals before coming up short in a match with Garrett Pace of Rockmart.

CLASS 5A
Arabia Mountain was the only DeKalb team to score in the Class 5A state championships finishing with 11.

Langston Blakely was responsible for all 11 points for the Rams as he finished in sixth place at 175. Blakely reached the championship semifinals before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss to Xander Dossett of Ola.
