DeKalb middle school basketball teams have two games under their belts before region play starts on Wednesday. Five boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams are sitting at 2-0.

Two games are done in the DeKalb middle school basketball season and teams move into region action this week beginning with Wednesday’s games before taking a break for Thanksgiving.

Five boys’ squads started the season 2-0 after Saturday’s contests as they prepare for their region schedules.

Druid Hills improved to 2-0 on the season with a 54-44 victory over Tucker (1-1) behind the play of Clay Humphries and Phillip Claybrooks as both put in 14 points for the Dragons. Sterling Pritchett led all scorers as he stroked the nets for 21 points to lead the Tigers.

Cedar Grove 34, Freedom 26
Cedar Grove upped its record to 2-0 on the season with a 34-26 win over the Freedom rams. The Saints’ leading scorer was Tayson Blunt with 16 (3 rebounds, 2 steals). Tony Braziel led the team with four assist and the duo of Jake Morton and Chad Mahomes each grabbed four rebounds. Freedom (0-2) was led by Jonoxe Claxton with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Chapel Hill 52, Lithonia 29
The Chapel Hill Panthers made it 2-0 on the season with a 52-29 win over the Lithonia Bulldogs (1-1) on Saturday. True Taylor led the team with 16 points (7-7 free throws) and three steals. Tavaris Roberts added nine points, 8 rebounds and four steals.

McNair 55, Champion 47
The McNair Mustangs improved to 2-0 by taking down the Champion Chargers (1-1) 55-47 last Saturday. Rashad Blaylock topped the scoring with a team-high 23 points while Braylin Whitlock knocked down 13 and Jacobi Johnson added 10.

Stone Mountain 62, Sequoyah 8
The Stone Mountain Pirates became the fifth team to go 2-0 as they defeated Sequoyah 62-8 on Saturday. Timothy Miller hit for 16 points and Khari Davis added 14 for the Pirates in the win. Robert Frazier led the way on defense with four steals.

Redan 44, Henderson 29
The defending champions Redan Raiders (1-1) got back on track by defeating the Henderson Cougars (0-2) 44-29 on Saturday. Amare Medhin was on fire as he went for 32 points (3 steals) to lead the Raiders. Ashdon Sims hit for 14 and Joshua Mosley added seven for Henderson.

Chamblee 42, Columbia 25
The Chamblee Bulldogs (1-1) rebounded from an opening week loss to win 42-25 over the Columbia Eagles (0-2) on Saturday. Griffen Herring hit for a game-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs in the win. Asaiah Moore hit for 14 points to lead Columbia.

Bethune 37, Peachtree 33
In a battle of Week 1 winners the Bethune Lions (1-1) came away with a hard-fought 37-33 win over the Peachtree Patriots (1-1). Kaiden Horton led Peachtree with 16 points.

Beacon Hill 37, Stephenson 26
The Beacon Hill Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season with a 37-26 win over the Stephenson Jaguars (1-1). Kellan Yeager led all players with 14 points in the win.

Saturday 11/11
GIRLS RECAPS
Seven girls’ basketball programs remained undefeated after getting wins on Saturday as the first week of the basketball season ended.

The Chapel Hill Lady Panthers remained perfect on the season with a 40-5 win over the Lithonia Lady Bulldogs. Mauri Barnes hit for 18 points to go with five assists and six steals for Chapel Hill. Teammate Avantey Gilreath hit for a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double for Chapel Hill.

Champion 45, McNair 7
The Champion Lady Chargers (2-0) are off to a good start in defending there 2023 county title after knocking off McNair 45-7 to remain undefeated. Kamay Rivers put up the unusual double-double of 15 points and 10 steals to lead the Chargers. Essence Grier added 15 points and eight steals while Lailah Cox chipped in nine points.

Cedar Grove 29, Freedom 17
A 17-point performance by Ziryah Bell fueled a 29-17 win by the Cedar Grove Lady Saints (2-0) over the Freedom Lady Rams. Bell’s good play was backed up by a strong defensive effort by Baylei Hinds-Perry. Freedom was led by Destiny Swint with nine points and five steals.

Stephenson 44, Beacon Hill 16
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars improved to 2-0 on the season with a 44-16 win over the Beacon Hill Lady Bulldogs last Saturday. Cyncere Sims-Turner hit for a game-high 20 points and Jayla Walton added 12 points.

Druid Hills 39, Tucker 11
Druid Hills ran away to a 39-11 win over the Tucker Lady Tigers (1-1) to improve to 2-0 on the season. Azelia Shell topped the scoring with 25 points for Druid Hills. Brooklyne Jenkins was noted for her play for Tucker in the game.

Redan 19, Henderson 5
The Redan Lady Raiders evened their season record at 1-1 with a 19-5 win over the Henderson Lady Cougars on Saturday. Jamiya Holmes hit for 12 points to lead all scorers and Dayonna Christopher had six rebounds and five assists.

Bethune 32, Peachtree 19
The Bethune Lady Lions picked up their first win of the season by defeating Peachtree (0-2) 32-19 on Saturday. Jada Barnes led Peachtree with eight points in the game.

Sequoyah 21, Stone Mountain 13
The Sequoyah Lady Braves evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 21-13 win over Stone Mountain. Ashly Perez hit for nine points and Heaven Daniel finished with 8 for Sequoyah.

Salem 48, Miller Grove 4
The Salem Lady Lions improved to 2-0 on the season with a 48-4 non-region win over the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines. Kennedy Thompson knocked down 17 points for Salem and teammate Zee Boone added 11.

Columbia 45, Chamblee 9
The Columbia Lady Eagles upped their record to 2-0 on the season with a 45-9 non-region win over the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs (0-2) on Saturday. Angel Rice had a game-high 18 points and was joined in double figures by teammates Tamicah Pate (14) and Maliyah Elliot (12).

BOYS
Stephenson 45, Sequoyah 6
Stephenson picked a season opening win with a 45-6 victory over Sequoyah. Terry Coleman led the way with 17 points for the Jaguars and Kai Jackson added 11.

Druid Hills 44, Henderson 26
Druid Hills won its opener 44-26 over Henderson. Clayton Humphries topped the scoring list with 13 points. Joshua Mosley had a game-high 14 points to lead Henderson and Ashdon Sims knocked down 10.

Peachtree 55, Freedom 33
Peachtree began the season with a 55-33 win over Freedom. Kaiden Horton scored 21 points for the Patriots and Cody Krieger added 15 more. Marquez Roundtree hit for eight points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Rams.

McNair 39, Salem 26
McNair was a winner to start the season as well taking down Salem 39-26 in the opener. Rashad Blaylock had a game-high 12 points for the Mustangs.

Lithonia 55, Columbia 35
The Lithonia Bulldogs downed the Columbia Eagles 55-35 in the first game of the season. Anthony Flournoy contributed 15 points (5 rebounds, 4 assists) while Jordan Washington hit for 9 and Javonte Herrington added 7 for the Bulldogs. Asaiah Moore hit double figures with 12 for the Eagles.

Stone Mountain 40, Beacon Hill 35
The Stone Mountain Pirates won a tight game with the Beacon Hill Bulldogs 40-35 in the season tipoff for both teams. Matthew Norman and My-El Summers led Beacon Hill in scoring and Ryan Sharp got several big stops on defense. Xevien Brinson hit for 13 points and battled well on the glass to fuel the Pirates.

Cedar Grove 53, Bethune 22
Tayson Blunt hit for a game-high 23 points to lead the Cedar Grove Saints to a convincing 53-29 win over the Bethune Lions to kick start the season. Joining Blunt in double figures were Toney Braziel (11) and Jake Morton (10).

Chapel Hill 65, Chamblee 25
Jacob Reid put together a double-double to pace the Chapel Hill Panthers in a 65-25 win over the Chamblee Bulldogs to key a season opening win. Reid finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds and added two blocked shots in the win. Brandon Daniel Jr. aided the Panthers’ cause with 13 points (5 rebounds, 3 steals) in a solid game.

Tucker 61, Redan 50
The duo of Sterling Pritchett and Vance Wilder teamed up to push the Tucker Tigers to a 61-50 win over the defending champion Redan Raiders to jump start their season. Pritchett wen for a game-high 21 points and Vance Wilder connected for 18 more. Redan was led by Amare Medhin with 19 points and Zaheim Silva with 14.

GIRLS
Salem 28, McNair 4
Back-to-back county tournament finalists Salem Lions put up a win in the season opener knocking off McNair 28-4. Faith Andrews hit for 12 points to lead the way and Zee Boone added 10.

Chapel Hill 54, Chamblee 0
A big game from Mauri Barnes and tough defense led Chapel Hill to a 54-0 win over Chamblee to begin the season. Barnes hit for 21 points and dished out five assists and made 4 steals in the win. Janise McCoy (10 assists, 7 steals) and Khloe Wilson (7 steals) were touch on the defensive end.

Cedar Grove 36, Bethune 22
Cedar Grove played hard on the boards and used a balanced attack to defeat the Bethune Lady Lions 36-22 to begin the season. Ziryah Bell led the way with 14 points (2 steals, 3 rebounds) along with Jessica Morton six points (7 rebounds, 3 steals) and Conner Hall five points (5 rebounds, 3 blocks).

Columbia 37, Lithonia 12
Columbia won its season opener 37-12 over the Lithonia Lady Bulldogs. Tamicah Pate hit for 15 points and Angel Rice added 11 in the victory.

Druid Hills 38, Henderson 8
The Druid Hills Lady Dragons picked up a 38-8 victory over the Henderson Lady Cougars. The win was keyed by the play of Azelia Shell and Madison Evans.

Champion 56, Miller Grove 2
The defending county champions Champion Lady Chargers had three players in double figures to roll to a 56-2 win over the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines. Essence Grier topped the scorers for Champion with 16 points and was joined in double figures by Jalaina Alford with 12 and Lailah Cox 11. Rakiah Miller was just out of double figures with 9 points.

Freedom 46, Peachtree 20
Grace Kasongo’s double-double keyed a season opening 46-20 win for Freedom over Peachtree. Kasongo hit for a game-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Freedom. Destiny Swint contributed nine points and 7 assists. Lauren Dowhower led Peachtree with six points.

Stephenson 51, Sequoyah 0
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars opened the season with a 51-0 non-region win over Sequoyah. Cyncere Sims-Turner hit for 17 points and Jayla Walton hit for 14 more.

Tucker 21, Redan 11
The hustle of Selicia Edwards led the way as Tucker knocked off Redan 21-11 to open the season.

Beacon Hill 31, Stone Mountain 3
Beacon Hill opened the season with a 31-3 win over Stone Mountain. Eighth graders Lucy Wallace and Shania Lee were the leaders for the Bulldogs. Seventh graders Kendale Lanier and Zoey Vander Els led the team in assists.
