Five Clarkston Angoras finished in the Top 10 to lead Clarkston to a second consecutive DeKalb County Boys’ Cross Country County Championships title over Dunwoody and Chamblee at the Druid Hills Middle School course on Tuesday (Oct. 4).

Clarkston scored a team low of 22 points to win by the largest margin (61 points) over Dunwoody (83) and Chamblee (83) since Chamblee won by 73 (33-106) over Walker in 1986. It was also the fourth title in the past five seasons (Druid Hills in 2021) for the Angoras.

The Angoras swept the top three medals and finished with five runners in the Top 10 on the way to the win. All five Clarkston runners finished under 17:45.00 led by senior Abenezer Woeller (16:50.10) who repeated as the individual title victor to lead the Clarkston finish.

Seniors Yosef Al (16:51.20) and Claude Tusiime (16:56.90) followed in second and third, respectively, for the Angoras. The next Angora to cross the finish line was Jean Pau Irasubiza (17:27.90) in seventh and rounding out the five scorers for Clarkston was Mengesha Alebachew (17:44.90) in ninth.

Dunwoody edged out Chamblee for second as Dunwoody’s Jackson Bacon (18:42.50) Chamblee’s Duke Nichols (18:45.60) in a battle of sophomores. Bacon finished 25th and Nichols was 26th to give the Wildcats the edge.

Dunwoody’s top finishers were junior Oliver Abbott (17:51.60) in 12th and sophomore Alex Loffredio (17:51.80) just behind in 13th.

Chamblee senior Matthew Coates (17:00.80) led the way for the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish overall on the day. Tucker had a pair of Top 10 runners in junior Abdeleselam Kerebo (17:07.70) in fifth and senior Norris Minnis (17:35.20) was eighth.

Lakeside sophomore Andrew Bitsko (17:09.60) was sixth and Martin Luther King junior Braylin Grier (17:50.00) was 10th to become just the second Lion to finish in the Top 10. The last Lion in the Top 10 was Brian Hall (18:07.86) in 2007. Grier also holds the best overall time in the Championships for the Lions.

Thirteen runners came in in times under 18:00.00 for the race as compared to just nine in 2022.
