Clarkston upsets No. 4 ranked Lovett 1-0 to advance to Class 4A Sweet 16 state playoff round.

A second half goal and tough defense led to the Clarkston Angoras knocking off No. 4 ranked and Region 5 No. 1 seed Lovett Lions 1-0 in the first round of the Class 4A boys’ soccer state playoffs on Thursday night at Lovett.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the half before Gladys Kosongo scored what would be the go-ahead goal for the Angoras in the second half.

Clarkston keeper Fidel Maleko pitched the shutout while making five saves in the win.

The Angoras (13-4-2) will travel to the winner of tonight’s (Friday) game between No. 5 ranked East Hall (12-3-0)/Cedartown (7-7-1) winner on Thursday, April 20 with a time to be determined.

GIRLS RECAPS
Three girls’ team were in action in the first round of their respective classifications last night including Druid Hills and Clarkston in Class 4A and Lakeside in Class 6A.

Druid Hills (7-9-2) fell on the road at Pace Academy (8-3-4) 4-1 to end their season. Emily Meier scored the Lady Red Devils’ lone goal on an assist by Sidney Cohen.

In the other Class 4A match, the Clarkston Lady Angoras finished the season at 10-8-0 with a first-round loss to the homestanding Lovett Lady Lions by a score of 10-0.

The Lakeside Lady Vikings (8-9-0) dropped a 3-1 decision at Woodward Academy. Lakeside’s Eleanor McLaren scored the Lady Vikings’ goal. Keeper Isabella La Madrid had five saves in the loss.

BOYS STATE PLAYOFFS TONIGHT
Four DeKalb teams open their state playoff tournaments tonight with Druid Hills (Class 4A) and Towers (Class 2A) both hosting matches.

No. 7 ranked Druid Hills (12-5-1) plays host to Pace Academy (7-3-5) at 8:00 tonight at Adams Stadium and Towers (10-2-1) hosts Mt. Paran Christian (7-7-0) in a 6:00 pm contest at Avondale Stadium today.

Dunwoody and Lakeside both go on the road tonight in the Class 6A boys’ state playoffs. Dunwoody (9-8-1) travels to Forest Park (11-3-2) for a 6:00 pm kickoff and Lakeside (6-8-3) heads to Woodward Academy (8-5-1) for a 6:30 match.
