Sequoyah Lady Braves end 27-game losing skid with 17-16 win over McNair.

The DeKalb County Junior Varsity Championships move into the quarterfinals on Saturday at various sites.

The Sequoyah Lady Braves broke a 27-game losing streak with a thrilling 17-16 win over the McNair Lady Mustangs on Wednesday.

Sequoyah had not won since defeating Stone Mountain 16-13 on January 11, 2020 (no games were played in 2021).

Trailing late in the game Rasheedah Shabazz went to the free-throw and sank both free throws to give Sequoyah (1-12) a 17-16 victory over McNair (0-12). Khole Richmond led Sequoyah with 7 points on the night and Shabazz finished with 4.

GIRLS RECAPS
Salem 37, Chapel Hill 27
The Salem Lady Lions (12-0) kept their undefeated mark intact by knocking off Region 1 leader Chapel Hill 37-27 to extend their win streak to 19 games dating back to January 19 of last season.Salem’s eighth graders Shanya Heath, Mya Perry, Zyon Lewis, Ariella Ealey, Janiyha Davis and Sarai Franklin were honored in their final home game as they helped their team to victory. Janiese McCoy had 13 points (5 steals) and Avantey Gilreath added 6 points and 7 blocks for Chapel Hill (10-2).

Stephenson 30, Champion 27
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars improved to 11-1 on the season with a hard-fought victory over the Champion Lady Chargers (10-2). Ji’Asiah Coggins and Essynce Moreland led the way with 9 points each in the game. Charmaine Owens led Champion with 14 points (6 rebounds, 6 steals) and Jhia Primrose had 9 points and 11 rebounds.

Cedar Grove 31, Bethune 17
The Cedar Grove Lady Saints (9-3) tuned up for the playoffs with a 31-17 win over the Bethune Lady Lions (7-5). Cedar Grove was led by Ziryah Bell (14 points, 2 assists, 4 steals) and Ariyahna Hinds-Perry (12 points, 6 steals, 3 rebounds).

Columbia 40, Tucker 20
The Columbia Lady Eagles (6-6) had a pair of players hit double figures in a 40-20 win over Tucker (1-11). Kennedi Johnson hit for 16 points and Aaliyah Lattimore pitched in 10.

Peachtree 18, Stone Mountain 8
The Peachtree Lady Patriots (5-7) won their last home game of the season in a defensive battle with Stone Mountain (3-9) by a score of 18-8. Playing in their last game at Peachtree eighth graders Keegan Bryan, Ramsey Branham and Erika Blake score four points each.

Freedom 25, Henderson 17
The Freedom Lady Rams evened their record at 6-6 by knocking off the Henderson Lady Cougars (4-8) 25-17 on Wednesday night. Grace Kasongo finished the nigh with 10 points (5 rebounds, 1 block) to go with 7 points (3 steals) from Wanny Glady and Genet Abatie added 4 points (4 steals, 2 assists).

Redan 23, Beacon Hill 22
Redan (6-6) moved to .500 on the season by escaping Beacon Hill (7-5) 23-22. Aubri Brooks had 11 points and Malia Mix contributed 7 for Redan in the win.

In other action on Wednesday Lithonia (4-8) defeated Miller Grove (2-10) 28-15 heading into the final regular season game on Saturday (Jan. 28) while Druid Hills (9-3) defeated Chamblee (7-5) 47-39.

BOYS RECAPS
Boys’ action featured three thrillers that went down to the end of the game including Chamblee’s big fourth quarter rally to get past Druid Hills 52-51 as teams gear up for next week’s first round of the DCSD Middle School Basketball Championships.

The Bulldogs (7-5) trailed the Dragons (8-4) by nine with just 2:20 left on the game clock when teammates Dante Cutillo, Bryant Swanson, Ellison Eily, Jalen Chatfield and Eston McDow came together to pull out the victory. Chamblee trailed 51-50 when McDow was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.6 seconds left on the clock.

McDow hit two free throws to give the Bulldogs the big win.

Columbia 37, Tucker 34
The Columbia Eagles (2-10) scored three points in the final 11 seconds to upend the Tucker Tigers (3-9) 37-34. Cymun Yeates hit the go-ahead free throw with 11 seconds to play for Columbia. Following a timeout, Columbia’s Nolan Donahue sealed the game with a steal and layup. Phamethius Mosley had a game-high 16 points for Columbia and Donuhue finished with 12.

Bethune 42, Cedar Grove 38
Bethune (10-2) and Cedar Grove (7-5) had to go to overtime before Bethune pulled out a 42-38 victory to notch the Lions’ 10th win of the season. The game was a back-and-forth affair before Bethune pulled it out as overtime came to an end. Mekyrius Miller had 12 points for Bethune and was joined in double figures by teammate L’Markus Scott with 10. Ke’shawn Briggs added 8 points for the winners.

Chapel Hill 45, Salem 37
The two second place teams in Regions 1 and 2 met for an early playoff test with Chapel Hill (10-2) coming out on top 45-37 against Salem (10-2). Keshawn George had 12 points for Chapel Hill while teammates Just Taylor and Nazir Mergan hit for 9 apiece.

Henderson 44, Freedom 34
Henderson (3-9) came up short of getting a playoff berth, but knocked off playoff bound Freedom (4-8) 44-34. Ashdon Sims had 15 points for Henderson and Armon Finch contributed 9 more. Freedom was led by Mojwok Ajobong with 11 points, Elijah Swint dished out 10 assists and Usher Evanculla contributed 7 points.

Champion 46, Stephenson 42
The Champion Chargers (12-0) remained undefeated after pulling out a 46-42 win in an intense playoff atmosphere against the Stephenson Jaguars (6-6). Carlin Cabbil had 14 points to lead Champion and Akil Robinson sent home a slam dunk that thrilled the fans.

Redan 45, Beacon Hill 31
The Redan Raiders (11-1) notched their 11th win of the season by defeating Beacon Hill (4-8) 45-31. Brandon Armstrong led the winners with 10 points and 3 steals.

Peachtree 49, Stone Mountain 30
The Peachtree Patriots (5-7) defeated the Stone Mountain Pirates (3-9) 49-30 in their final home game of the season. Mason Scharf and Trevor Lordo connected on 10 points each in the win.

Lithonia 54, Miller Grove 37
The Lithonia Bulldogs (9-3) tuned up the playoffs by defeating the Miller Grove Wolverines (4-8) 54-37. Armani Myco led the way with 11 points while Caleb Cooper and Jashun Smith were just behind with 10 points apiece for Lithonia.

In other action on Wednesday, the McNair Mustangs (2-10) ran past Sequoyah (0-12) 52-10.
