Miller Grove and Bethune boys' pull off upsets of No. 1 seeds in first round of the County Middle School Basketball Championships.

Miller Grove and Bethune boys’ pull off upsets of No. 1 seeds in first round of the County Middle School Basketball Championships.

Bethune and Miller Grove each knocked off a No. 1 seed in the opening round of the DCSD Middle School Basketball County Championships Tournament on Wednesday night.

The No. 4 seeded Bethune Lions (8-6) gave the No. 1 seeded Tucker Tigers (12-2) just their second loss on the season with a hard-fought 53-49 win at Tucker. Jaylon Phillips was the catalyst for the Lions as he hit for 19 points. Corinthius Collins (12 points) and Dontavious Strainfield (10) also scored in double figures for the Lions. Bethune moves into the quarterfinals to take on a streaking Champion Chargers (8-6) club that won its fifth consecutive game with a 43-37 win over Lithonia (4-10) to advance.

Miller Grove 45, Druid Hills 43
Another No. 4 seed, the Miller Grove Wolverines (6-8), upended the No. 1 seeded Druid Hills Dragons (9-5) in a 45-43 thriller at Druid Hills. Braylen Brown put the winning hoop through the net with 14.5 seconds to propel the Wolverines into the quarterfinals. Elijah Gleaves scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the winners. Messiah White (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Isaiah Oglesby (8 points, 3 blocks) also aided in the upset. Miller Grove moves on to Saturday to take on the No. 2 seeded Chamblee Bulldogs (12-2) who defeated Chapel Hill (8-6) 55-47 to move into the second round. Harlem Perine hit for an outstanding 33 points with 5 assists and 6 rebounds for Chapel Hill.

Cedar Grove 58, Peachtree 23
The Cedar Grove Saints (12-2) outscored the Peachtree Patriots (4-10) 42-8 in the second half on the way to a 58-23 victory to move into the quarterfinals. Emanuel Green scored a game-high 28 points in the winning effort. Cedar Grove which led 16-15 at the half goes into the quarterfinals against Freedom (7-7) on Saturday.

Freedom 42, Stephenson 27
The Freedom Rams (7-7) pulled away from the Stephenson Jaguars (4-10) for a 42-27 first round win. Freedom got a game-high 23 points from King Hernandez and 10 points from Keshawn George in the win.

GIRLS RECAPS
The Champion Lady Chargers (13-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 41-8 first round win over the Freedom Lady Rams (4-10). Charmaine Owens (12 points, 7 steals), Lierra Cousar (9 points, 4 steals), Chance Alexander (7 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals) and Lauren Chavis (7 points, 5 steals) led the way for Champion. Champion plays host to No. 2 seed Chamblee (10-4) on Saturday.

Chamblee 35, Columbia 28
The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs (10-4) advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with a 35-28 victory over the Columbia Lady Eagles (7-7). Avery D’Auria was the offensive leader for Chamblee with 12 points and Madeline Harron was tough on defense.

Miller Grove 53, Druid Hills 11
The No. 2 seeded Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (12-2) road the scoring of Kaeslyn Benjamin (18 points) and Bailee Canty (15 points) to a 53-11 win over the Druid Hills Lady Dragons (3-8). Miller Grove travels to Chapel Hill (13-1) for a quarterfinal matchup.
Chapel Hill defeated Tucker (4-9) 47-13 to advance.

Stephenson 34, Redan 24
The No. 2 seed Stephenson Lady Jaguars (11-3) moved into the quarterfinals with a 34-24 score over the Redan Lady Raiders (8-5). Kamryn Larkin was the leading scorer for the Jaguars with 10 points. Sarah Okorowanta added 9 points and Sole Jefferson 8 more for Stephenson.
