DeKalb ranked teams Cedar Grove (No. 1 Class 3A) and Stephenson (No. 4 Class 4A) got their region races off to a good start with wins on Friday night.

The Saints won their home opener at Godfrey Stadium 35-12 against Carver of Atlanta (0-4) to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 5-3A action a pair of second half touchdowns by Rashad Dubinion to break open a one-point game.

Leading 7-6 behind a first-quarter, Montego Johnson 24-yard interception return the Saints answered a third-quarter Carver touchdown with 28 consecutive points sparked by Austin Smith’s five-yard touchdown run. Louis Dominguez added his second PAT of the game to make it 14-6.

Cedar Grove stopped Carver’s next drive and finished off another score with Dubinion’s first of the night on a nine-yard run. Dominguez’s PAT pushed the lead to 21-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Smith and Dubinion struck early in the fourth quarter as the pair hooked up on a 48-yard pass play with Dubinion reaching the end zone. Dominguez tacked on the PAT to make it 28-6. Quinterio Lawson closed out the Cedar Grove scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run. Amari Forte added the PAT to make it 35-6.

Carver added a late score for the final of 35-12.

Dubinion finished the game with 102 yards receiving and touchdown on four receptions to go with 23 yards rushing and a touchdown. Smith was 9 of 18 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown while added 55 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Everett Roussaw led the defensive effort with 13 tackles including two for a loss. Junior defensive lineman Joshua White added six tackles along with 1 sack and two tackles for a loss.

The No. 4 ranked Stephenson Jaguars (2-0, 1-0) pitched their second shutout of the season knocking off DeKalb rival and Region 6-4A foe Arabia Mountain Rams (0-2, 0-1) 7-0 at Hallford Stadium.

Quashaun Johnson’s six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was all the Jaguars would need in the win. Emanuel Rios added the PAT.

Miller Grove (1-1, 1-0) also picked up a Region 6-4A win on Friday night with a 38-6 victory over Druid Hills on Friday night. The Wolverines cruised out to a 26-0 lead at the half on the way to the win.

Jarvis Stewart led the Wolverines with 117 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Jamil Robert had five tackles for a loss and Stephen Bacon had seven total tackles to lead the defense.

Druid Hills picked up its first score of the season on the final play of game on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Townes Purdy to make the final of 38-6.

Chamblee finally got to open its season and defeated Georgia Force 27-14 to pick up a win after their opener against Woodland of Cartersville was cancelled last week.
