The 59th annual DCSD County Wrestling Championships get underway at 5:00 pm at Tucker High School on Friday as Dunwoody tries to defend its 2019 crown against 20 challengers.

The 21 teams entered include Arabia Mountain, Cedar Grove, Chamblee, Clarkston, Columbia, Decatur, Druid Hills, Dunwoody, Lakeside, Lithonia, Marist, McNair, Miller Grove, ML King, Redan, St. Pius X, Stephenson, Stone Mountain, SW DeKalb, Towers, and Tucker.

Six reigning champions return with five moving up a weight class from a year. The six include Thomas Termini (Marist, 106 to 113), Ethan Duke (Decatur, 113 to 120), Jaheim Williams (SW DeKalb 145 to 152), Derek Price (Stone Mountain, 152), Micah Carrier (Lakeside, 182 to 195) and Charles McCowan (Dunwoody, 195 to 220).

McCowan leads a strong contingent for the Wildcats as they try to defend their title. Parker Smith, runner-up at 126, is moving to 132, while Adam Starks (4th in 113) is moving to 120, Ben Tarrago (4th in 120) is moving to 126 and 182 runner-up Tyler Rush is going up to 195.

Runner-up Southwest DeKalb’s Williams is moving into 152 after winning at 145 a year ago and could match up with 2019 champ Derek Price of Stone Mountain in the gold medal round. Columbia’s Danny O’Neal finished fourth at 145 and is also moving into 152.

The Panthers’ Jeunte McCray remains in the 106 weight class after finishing as the runner-up in 2019 as 2019 champ Thomas Termini of Marist moves up to 113 where Decatur’s Ethan Duke conquered in 2019, but is moving to 120.

Championship rounds of the tournament will run from 5:00 to 8:30 pm covering up through the quarterfinals. Consolation rounds begin at 8:30 and conclude at 9:30 until Saturday morning at 9:00 am.

The finals are scheduled for 3:00 pm followed by the medal and trophy presentations.
