(STONE MOUNTAIN, GA) – At the Board Meeting on January 8, the DeKalb County Board of Education reelected Mr. Diijon DaCosta, Sr. (District 6) as Board Chair and Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce (District 3) Vice Chair for 2024. This marks their second consecutive year in these roles, demonstrating the Board’s continued confidence in their leadership.

Mr. DaCosta expressed his gratitude and commitment to DCSD and his colleagues. “Once again, I am honored to lead the DeKalb County Board of Education as its Chairman and a proud graduate of DeKalb County Schools, ” he said. “It’s no secret that this school district is on the move with the exceptional leadership of our Superintendent, Dr. Devon Q Horton, and our dedicated teachers and staff.

Mr. DaCosta applauded the progress being made by the current administration. He highlighted the District’s successes in various areas, including academic achievement, educator recruitment and retention, the IGNITE DeKalb Teacher Residency Program, early learning center initiatives, and increasing student support. He also emphasized the importance of teamwork and the Board’s unified approach to prioritizing the children’s best interests and the DeKalb County community.

“With the support of the entire board working together, we’re committed to teamwork, prioritizing what’s best for our children, and ensuring continued success for our DeKalb County community. I look forward to another year of good governance and great strides that support our scholars to achieve greatness.”

Mrs. Pierce also expressed her appreciation for the confidence Board members have shown her.

“It is an incredible honor that my colleagues re-elected me as their vice chair,” she said. “We have been working well together in the spirit of true teamwork, and I’m very proud of that. Like Chair DaCosta, I feel that our dynamic new and veteran District leadership has ignited a new interest in our District by continuously embarking on innovative ways to move student achievement forward, support our employees, improve our schools, strengthen our fiscal soundness and be assessable to community members.”

“We have the potential to be a ‘waitlist’ school district where educators and staff compete to join our team. As the vice chair and District 3 Board member, I will continue to focus on and support ways to catapult our District to greatness,” Mrs. Pierce said.
