superintendent newsletter
Greetings DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Family,

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I want to take this time to thank all of our teachers, school administrators, counselors, bus drivers, custodians, nutrition staff and all of our DCSD employees for their hard work and dedication in educating and serving our scholars. We understand that we are in challenging times with this global pandemic, and some of our employees have had to take on a little bit more than what they expected.

We hear your concerns and we are doing our best to make sure your concerns are addressed and resolved. I want all of our employees to know that you are appreciated. This district cannot operate without you all and I am thankful for each and every one of our employees.

Recruiting and Retention Program

Last week, DCSD rolled out its generous recruiting and retention program aimed at continuing to provide educational excellence and creating professional growth opportunities for current and new employees. As employers, we must adapt to the new labor market so that our District can cultivate and offer opportunities to only the best talent. For those reasons, we have reexamined the way we approach recruiting and retaining top employees for our scholars. We are proud of the new benefits we are offering. This is a great opportunity for those hoping to join a great District.

To create a positive workplace culture and compensate employees with competitive pay, the district is offering up to $2,000 for new hires, a retention bonus of up to 6% of the annual salary, a loyalty/longevity program of $1,500, an attendance program of $500, a wellness program of up to $500, and a referral program of $200. The District’s recruitment program’s objective is to attract the best talent in the midst of a shifting economic landscape. The program also aims to compensate employees at competitive rates to ensure best practices and educational excellence for all scholars.

As part of the overall benefits package to compete with other districts for successful candidates, the Division of Operations and Transportation is offering $1,200 paid training and an additional $150 referral program. To promote a safe learning environment, the District is offering a $1,000 bonus for candidates vaccinated against COVID-19. This week, I’m shining a spotlight on Hambrick Elementary School fifth-grader Tina Tu. Tina was selected as Student of the Month for August. She is a member of the school’s H.E.R.O. Accreditation Community Survey

DCSD is currently undergoing an accreditation renewal process. Part of this process is the collection of feedback from stakeholders. We invite you to participate in the Family and Community Stakeholder Survey. The results of this survey, along with other stakeholder artifacts, will be used in the district’s accreditation renewal process.

The Family and Community Stakeholder Survey is available in the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Nepali, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Telugu, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese. The survey is confidential and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey is open until Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, at 5 p.m. You can access the survey at the following link:

Last week, DCSD announced the launch of the Edulog Parent Portal smartphone app. The app is designed to give parents and guardians information about their child’s school bus ride. The app allows parents and guardians to follow their child’s bus on a real-time map and stay up-to-date with notifications when that bus nears the bus stop, the school, or a custom alert zone. Parents and guardians only receive access by registering with data unique to their child. For more information, please click here.

Medical Roundtable

I have mentioned the district’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee and how this committee has helped the district navigate the pandemic. Now, the public has an opportunity to meet the committee during my virtual Medical Roundtable on Sept. 22, 2021 at 6 p.m. Medical and public health experts will join me to address COVID-19 precautions, public health guidelines, the district’s policy and future implications. For more information on how to view the meeting and where to submit questions, please click here.
