Greetings DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Family,
I hope everyone had a great weekend. I hope everyone is continuing to do everything that they can to lower the spread of COVID-19 in our community. DCSD’s partner, DeKalb Board of Health, is offering free COVID-19 vaccines at its mobile clinics. The last day to get a vaccine at the mobile clinic is on Sept. 15, 2021, at Exchange Recreation and Intergenerational Center in Decatur from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
DCSD is encouraging those who are eligible to get vaccinated to help keep you and your family safe and healthy. The vaccine is free and no appointment, ID, proof of citizenship or health insurance is needed to get a vaccine at the mobile clinic. Please continue to follow the COVID-19 Health and Safety guidelines and protocol. Please continue to wear your masks, wash your hands, and socially distance to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
E-SPLOST Advisory Committee
DCSD invites all community members to take part in one of the most important parts of education: tax dollar spending. The public is invited to apply for membership on the E-SPLOST (Education Special-Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) Advisory Committee. Applications can be submitted online until Monday, Sept. 20, 2021.
The E-SPLOST Advisory Committee provides citizen input, oversight, and a review of a voter-approved project list paid for with E-SPLOST revenue. The committee consists of members of the public who share the common goal of maintaining transparency and communication from DCSD to the DeKalb County community. Candidates must be residents who live within DCSD boundaries. Members may not be DeKalb County Board of Education members, DCSD employees, or have any economic interest in DCSD projects. Experience in accounting, architecture, auditing, construction, engineering, finance, K-12 education, law, planning, project management, and/or real estate is desired.
In addition, candidates must be able to provide two hours to attending monthly meetings. These meetings typically take place in the evening. If selected, members must also pass a background check and sign a non-disclosure agreement. To apply for the committee, please click here.
Accreditation Community Survey
DCSD is currently undergoing an accreditation renewal process. Part of this process is the collection of feedback from stakeholders. We invite you to participate in the Family and Community Stakeholder Survey. The results of this survey, along with other stakeholder artifacts, will be used in the district’s accreditation renewal process.
The Family and Community Stakeholder Survey is available in the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Nepali, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Telugu, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese. The survey is confidential and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey is open until Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, at 5 p.m. You can access the survey at the following link: https://survey.sogosurvey.com/r/eY7O00
This week, I’m shining a spotlight on Lithonia Middle School eighth-grader Shemuel Ephraim. Shemuel recently went on tour as the featured drummer for legendary gospel artist John P. Key. Shemuel has been a part of the middle school band program since the sixth grade, and he also participates with the high school drumline. Shemuel is a talented, bright star at Lithonia Middle School and I am proud to shine a spotlight on this outstanding student!
For #TeamTuesday last week, I recognized DeKalb County Board of Education Chair Mrs. Vickie B. Turner. With over 24 years of experience in education, Mrs. Turner is an expert at establishing goals and inspiring students to perform at their maximum potential. Thank you for your passion for the DCSD community!
Please continue to visit our website and your school’s website for the latest information on district news. Please click here to watch today’s Board of Education meeting. Have a great week!
