Greetings DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Family,

I hope everyone is having an exciting and safe summer.

DCSD staff has been working hard this summer to prepare for the new school year. We look forward to welcoming our scholars back to school on Aug. 2. For more information on the first day of school, bus routes, meal plans and other vital information, please visit the district’s Back-to-School website. The website also features a parent checklist to help parents and guardians prepare for the first day.

DCSD’s MOSAIC Summer Learning Program is going strong, and it’s exciting to see our scholars deeply engaged in their program and gaining the knowledge and life skills needed to achieve their academic and personal goals. I want to shout out DCSD’s My Brother’s Keeper Summer Program, which took two weeks ago. I was thrilled to see our young men and boys in various activities and learning new skills from our community role models.

As a DCSD mom, it was great seeing my son participate in the Robotics Camp, and he’s looking forward to the AP Bridge program later this month. I was thrilled with the level of engagement, communication from the programs and the overall quality of his experience. My staff and I look forward to receiving feedback from our scholars, families, and teachers about their experience in the MOSAIC Summer Learning Program.

Mask Protocol

Last month, DCSD announced its mask-wearing protocol for the upcoming school year. The district is committed to providing safe learning environments for students and staff. We are excited to bring our scholars back to our buildings to continue our mission to provide equitable educational services to meet students’ needs.

We will continue to monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and communicate any changes to our policy to our families at the upcoming Board of Education meeting.

Back-to-School Drive-Thru

DCSD will host its Back-To-School Drive-Thru event on July 31, 2021, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations: Buck Godfrey Stadium in Decatur, James R. Hallford Stadium in Clarkson and North DeKalb Stadium in Chamblee. The event will feature DCSD Village, school supplies, food distribution, vendor resources and refreshments. The DeKalb Board of Health will be onsite from 8 a.m. to noon to offer COVID-19 vaccinations.

Parents or guardians must provide proof of student registration through Infinite Campus on their mobile device or a registration printout to receive school supplies. For more information, please visit our website.

Registration is open for the 2021-2022 school year. Once you have completed your application and it has been reviewed and approved, you will receive an updated status email from Infinite Campus. Please note that school enrollment is separate from registration. Once you’ve received the registration approval email, please contact your child’s school to complete the enrollment process.

Please make sure your information is correct in Infinite Campus. To begin the new student registration process, please click here. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your student’s school or DCSD’s Family Impact Hub at (678) 676-0384.

Here’s how DCSD Parents can stay up to date on their children’s attendance, report cards, and more! Follow these instructions to make sure that you are signed up for Infinite Campus.

Virtual Learning Survey

Although all DCSD students will be scheduled for in-person instruction, the district offers families virtual learning options for students who will not participate in in-person instruction. The virtual learning options allow students to learn from virtual teachers through FLEX Academy, Georgia Virtual School or designated virtual teachers throughout the school district. For more information and to complete the virtual learning survey, please click here.

Please note: If you choose for your child to enroll in a virtual learning option, the decision is a semester-long commitment. There will be an opportunity to change your child’s learning option to in-person learning for second semester in November 2021.

Good News

Even during the summer break, DCSD is continuing to shine with outstanding news to celebrate. We had a great time today celebrating Mr. Tylan Bailey with Good Morning America! It was awesome to see Mr. Bailey celebrated and rewarded for his hard work to become a certified teacher after serving as a custodian for more than 20 years at Hightower Elementary School. I look forward to seeing Mr. Bailey excel in his new position as a physical education teacher at Briar Vista Elementary School.

Congratulations to Lakeside High School math teacher Ms. Taylor Ohlstrom for being selected by the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Testing (PAEMST) as a 2021 finalist in the Mathematics award category! Congratulations, Ms. Ohlstrom, for being selected for this prestigious honor in recognition of truly outstanding teaching and leadership in STEM! Ms. Ohlstrom will be honored at the state ceremonies this year.

Congratulations are in order again for our Communications Department, which recently won three Publications and Digital Media awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). The department won the Video Produced In-House – Excellence award for its “Wave Them Bows” COVID-19 music video, Marketing Publication – Excellence award for its Communications Toolkit, and the Annual Report – Merit award for its work on Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris’s 100-Day Report. NSPRA’s Publications and Digital Media Excellence Awards recognize outstanding education publications, e-newsletters, digital media programs, radio/TV/video programs, social media, infographics, blogs and websites.

Improving communications is a priority for the district. We are grateful for the recognition of our hard work and being honored among other esteemed organizations!

Lastly, I want to thank the city of Dunwoody and Dunwoody Homeowners Association for including me in its Fourth of July Parade. I had a great time celebrating America with our Dunwoody High School scholars and School Board Member Anna Hill.

Continue to enjoy your summer, and please click here to watch today’s Board of Education meeting.
