DCSD’s Educational Support Professional I of the Year Goes Above and Beyond for John R. Lewis Elementary School
While working as a library media assistant, John R. Lewis Elementary School administrative assistant Nicole Jones knew she could do more to serve the school district. When the opportunity to work at the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) became available, she knew this was her chance to be more of a service to her school community.
“When I saw the vacancy posting, I immediately recognized it as the perfect opportunity to contribute in a new way, and I knew it was the right fit for me,” said Ms. Jones.
Although she has only been working for the District for six years, she has made enough impact on the John R. Lewis Elementary community to be selected as the school’s 2024-2025 Educational Support Professional I of the Year (ESPOTY I) and DCSD’s ESPOTY I. She received the prestigious honor at the District’s 11th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards Gala last November. She said the ESPOTY I recognition reaffirms that her hard work and dedication to supporting students and teachers does not go unnoticed.
“I am proud to represent the district and remain committed to making a positive impact every day,” said Ms. Jones. “I am grateful to be part of a district that values the contributions of its support staff, and I look forward to continuing to serve and inspire those around me.”
Ms. Jones first became an administrative assistant at age 15. She has been working professionally in the role for 10 years, gaining more experience and polishing her skills. Principal Dr. Renita McMillan said her knowledge and skills have made her a valuable asset for John R. Lewis Elementary.
“Ms. Jones is the heartbeat of John R. Lewis Elementary School. She goes above and beyond the call of duty, ensuring that our students, teachers, and administrative team have the support they need,” said Dr. McMillan. “Whether assisting in the front office, providing encouragement to students, or securing resources from the community, Ms. Jones does it all with a spirit of generosity and a commitment to excellence.”
Ms. Jones is dedicated to being present and supporting the students, even after school hours and over the weekend.
“The students absolutely love her, and it’s clear why,” said Dr. McMillan. “She makes them feel seen, valued, and supported in a way that leaves a lasting impression. She is truly one of a kind.”
Ms. Jones is thankful for Dr. McMillan’s impact on her career and personal life.
“Her wisdom and guidance, along with the values instilled in me by my parents, have been invaluable,” she said. “She creates a sense of home, and I deeply appreciate her daily leadership and support.”
As Ms. Jones celebrates being the District’s ESPOTY I, she will continue to focus on growing professionally, serving her community, and being a positive role model for her students.
