Elementary (PreK-5)

The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) operates a diverse network of 76 elementary schools/centers and 3 elementary/middle combination schools that serve students and families throughout the county. These schools are staffed by qualified, caring educators who provide a rigorous yet nurturing learning environment for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Elementary educational options include traditional schools and six school choice programs: Dual Language Immersion (DLI), Montessori Early Learning, International Baccalaureate (IB), Theme, Magnet, and other specialized offerings (see below for details). The district also prioritizes early learning initiatives, such as the Early Learning Center, which serves 3- and 4-year-olds with a focus on kindergarten readiness.

DCSD’s comprehensive elementary curriculum promotes academic excellence, critical thinking, and social-emotional development. Aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and the district’s Portrait of a Graduate, the curriculum emphasizes core academic subjects while integrating enrichment areas such as art, music, physical education, and STEM to support whole-child development. To meet the diverse needs of students, the district offers a range of programs and support services, including school counselors, nurses, academic skills centers for tutoring, exceptional education (formerly special education), gifted education, and English Language Learner programs. Elementary students may also participate in extracurricular athletics, fostering well-rounded individuals who are physically active and socially and emotionally prepared for future success.

In recent years, DCSD has prioritized modernizing school facilities and implementing technology-rich instructional tools to enhance the learning experience. In response to concerns about the impact of cell phones on student focus and mental health, the district launched Disconnect to Reconnect. DCSD also ensures a safe learning environment through the presence of School Resource Officers (SROs), the hiring of Elementary Safety Associates, and the implementation of the Centegix Rapid Incident Response system.

Our schools foster a welcoming atmosphere and encourage family engagement through volunteer programs, school events, and other activities. DCSD actively connects with parents and the community via school websites, newsletters, social media, and DSTV to keep all stakeholders informed and involved.
