Middle (6-8)

The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) offers a comprehensive middle school program through 19 schools serving students in grades 6 through 8, as well as 3 elementary/middle combination schools. These schools are staffed by hardworking, dedicated educators committed to supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of students during this critical stage of learning and growth. Middle grades learning options include traditional schools and five school choice programs: Dual Language Immersion (DLI), International Baccalaureate (IB), Theme, Magnet, and other specialized selections (see below for details).
DCSD’s middle school curriculum is aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and the district’s Portrait of a Graduate, with a strong focus on core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. In addition to academics, students have access to a wide range of courses that nurture the whole child, including fine arts, physical education, and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE). Instruction across subjects emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application to ensure students are well-prepared for high school and beyond.
To further support student success, DCSD offers a robust range of programs and student services, including school counselors, nurses, academic skills centers for tutoring, exceptional education (formerly special education), gifted education, and English Language Learner programs. The district also promotes mental health and wellness through dedicated initiatives that foster a supportive and inclusive school climate. Middle school athletic programs provide students with opportunities to build physical fitness, teamwork, leadership skills, and school spirit.
DCSD continues to invest in modernizing facilities and integrating technology-rich instructional tools that enhance teaching and learning. In response to growing concerns about the impact of mobile devices on student focus and well-being, the district introduced the Disconnect to Reconnect initiative, promoting intentional time away from phones during the school day. To ensure school safety, the district employs School Resource Officers (SROs) and has implemented the EVOLV Express weapons detection system (in schools with grades 6–12), alongside the Centegix Rapid Incident Response platform.
Middle schools in DCSD foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, with numerous opportunities for family engagement through volunteer programs, school events, and other activities. The district maintains strong connections with parents and the community through school websites, newsletters, social media platforms, and DSTV, keeping all stakeholders informed and engaged in student success.
