During its Regular Board Meeting on January 13th, members of the DeKalb County Board of Education (DCBOE) unanimously elected Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce (District 3) as the new Board Chair and Ms. Allyson Gevertz (District 4) as Vice Chair for 2025.
“I am humbled and honored to have earned the unanimous vote of my veteran and newly elected colleagues to serve as chair of our Board,” Mrs. Pierce said. “I am equally grateful to have received the votes of my constituents in District 3, which returned me to what I consider to be one of the greatest servant leadership jobs I’ve ever held.”
Mrs. Pierce reflected on her path to this latest leadership role as the newly elected Board Chair.
“Immediate past Chair Diijon DaCosta, Sr. and I had the opportunity to experience many significant ‘firsts’ together during our two years in leadership, and I look forward to an equally amazing journey ahead with my Vice-Chair, Allyson Gevertz, other colleagues, Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton, and all the highly valued employees in our great District.”
Likewise, Ms. Gevertz expressed pride in the vote of confidence from her distinguished colleagues.
“I am grateful to our Board of Education for trusting us to lead,” Ms. Gevertz said. “We have exceptional new and returning Board members, an outstanding Superintendent, and a strong passion for students. We are prepared for 2025!”
On a personal note, Ms. Gevertz shared her delight about working closely with her colleague and friend.
“I have worked with Mrs. Pierce in various education advocacy roles for nearly 20 years and have always admired her integrity and professionalism. As vice chair, I am honored to become her official number one supporter.”
Mrs. Pierce set the stage for what promises to be a thoughtful and productive Board for 2025.
“Always acting in the spirit of camaraderie, this Board will continue to represent well and do what’s necessary to keep our DeKalb County School District on the cutting edge of high achievement.”
On Tuesday, January 7, four DCBOE members took their oath to begin four-year terms: Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Andrew B. Ziffer (District 1), Dr. Tiffany Tate-Hogan (District 5), and Mr. Awet Eyasu (District 7).
