FLEX Ahead Summer School

FLEX Academy offers access to virtual courses anytime, anyplace, and at any pace to meet every learner’s needs. FLEX Restore Classes provide students an opportunity to recover credit over the summer in a class that they have previously attempted and failed.  Students who do not successfully complete these courses or fail to login daily may be dropped from the course. All courses follow the district’s curriculum at a glance and academic calendar for consistency and equity. FLEX Academy offers access to virtual courses anytime, anyplace, and at any pace to meet every learner’s needs. FLEX Ahead Classes provide students an opportunity to take classes that they have not previously taken in a condensed summer timeline.  Students must be highly motivated to complete FLEX Ahead courses as they are full-length courses and self-paced.  Prior academic performance in the selected subject should be strongly considered when choosing to enroll in FLEX Ahead courses. All courses follow the district’s curriculum at a glance and academic calendar for consistency and equity.
  • Students are required to meet with their local school counselor to determine course needs and be registered for course(s).
  • Eligible Students: All high school students (grades 9th-12th) and 8th grade students who have previously failed the requested course with a grade of 55-69 may participate in FLEX Restore summer classes.
  • Priority:

    • All eligible students (8th-12th) will be enrolled until cap is reached
  • Cost: There is no cost for FLEX Restore courses
  • Courses Offered:

    • English: Lit 9, World Lit, American Lit, British Lit
    • Math: Coordinate Algebra, Accelerated GSE Coordinate Algebra/Analytic Geometry A, Analytic Geometry, Accelerated GSE Analytic Geometry B/Advanced Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Advanced Mathematical Decision Making
    • Social Studies: Civics, World Geography, World History, US History, Economics
    • Science: Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science
    • World Language: Spanish I, Spanish II, French I, French II, French III
      Electives: Intro to Digital Technology
  • 2.0 units maximum can be taken with FLEX Academy this summer.
  • The failing grade for the requested course (55-69) must be evident on the student’s transcript.

NCAA: Athletes should not use FLEX Restore as a summer school option due to NCAA regulations for approved coursework.

  • All course content and assessments will be accessible via VERGE and progress is monitored by DCSD teachers.
  • Students are required to attend orientation during the first two days of the course. Orientation will be available virtually.
  • Student support will consist of virtual open instructional labs and virtual guided tutorials.
  • On-Site Support Locations are Lakeside HS, Dunwoody HS, McNair HS, and Columbia HS.
Registration: April 30, 2021-June 4, 2021
Withdrawal Deadline: June 7, 2021
Course Dates: June 1-June 18, 2021
EOC Testing Dates: June 21-25, 2021 (Test will be administered at home school.)

Internet & Technology
Students must have access to an internet connected device with a webcam (recommended). Updated desktops, laptops, and Chromebooks are recommended.

PC:
  • 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or faster processor (or equivalent)
  • Windows 10, 8.1 (32-bit/64-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit)
  • 512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 or later, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome
Mac:
  • 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo or faster processor
  • 512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended)
  • Mac OS X 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11
  • Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome

FLEX does not provide troubleshooting of personal devices.

Course Progress

  • Students are expected to submit assignments according to the course planner (1-2 per assignments per course per day)..
  • FLEX tracks attendance through submission of assignments. Parents will be contacted at 2-Day absences.
  • Communication must be made with the FLEX Administration Office if student will be idle for an extended period. Students who are unsuccessful will be dropped from course at the end of the term.

Virtual Course Expectations

  • Students should plan to spend 3-5 hours per day per course on learning course content and completing assignments.
  • Guided Tutorials and Open Instructional Labs will be available to all students virtually via Microsoft Teams.
  • Students must finish all coursework by June 18th at 1:00 pm.
