Key Actions
Healthy Learning Environments
- Incorporate high-efficiency building standards into new construction and major renovations to reduce energy and operational costs.
- Upgrade facilities with energy-efficient lighting, HVAC systems, and building controls to improve indoor comfort and reduce energy use.
- Incorporate sustainability and building performance data into student learning opportunities, allowing facilities to serve as living laboratories.
- Indoor Air Quality: Improve indoor air quality through enhanced ventilation systems, filtration upgrades, and preventative maintenance programs.
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Increase the use of low-VOC paints, adhesives, flooring, cleaning products, and furnishings to create healthier indoor environments for students and staff.
- Nature Based Wellness: Integrate natural daylighting and outdoor learning spaces where it is feasible to support student wellness. Incorporate outdoor walking trails and quiet reflection spaces for students and staff.
- Green Certification: DCSD will continue to expand its occupiable square footage to align with green certified standards. Align new construction and renovations with recognized green building frameworks or best practices.
Sustainable Materials
- Sustainable Building Materials, Equipment, and Furniture: Select building materials, equipment, and furniture made from recycled, responsibly sourced, or low-emission materials.
- Building Material Reuse and Recycling: Utilizing recycling vendors for demolition to divert from landfill. Support local industries that repurpose building materials, equipment, and furnishings for building demolitions or renovations.
