Key Actions

Nutrition Initiatives

  • Sustainable Food Procurement: Increase the purchase of locally grown, seasonal, and sustainably produced food for school nutrition programs.
  • Edible School Yard Gardens: Edible gardens that provide nutritious, environmentally responsible foods to be served within DCSD facilities.
  • Food Recovery Programs: DCSD partners with organizations that promote food recovery initiatives to support students, families, staff, and communities living with food insecurities.
  • Closed-Loop Composting: Initiative to divert organic waste to compost and return nutrients to school gardens to enrich soils.
  • Collaborate with Food & Nutrition Services to provide healthy food options in DCSD.
  • Eliminate Styrofoam and implement compostable service packaging programs across all DCSD cafeterias.

Wellness Initiatives

  • DCSD Healthy Initiatives Program: Districtwide initiative to promote overall student and staff wellness.
  • Wellness programs to encourage staff leadership in promoting healthy practices around food and movement.
  • Employee & Student Resource Groups: Programs that support community, inclusion, and well-being.
  • Student Identity Spaces: Safe spaces that foster belonging and emotional wellness.
  • Bike, Walk & Roll to School: Alternative commute options that encourage safe, active transportation that promote physical activity and sustainable mobility.
  • Counseling & Well-Being Programs: DCSD resources that support student mental health and resilience.

Green & Healthy Schools

  • Buildings assessed and monitored to improve indoor environmental quality and support healthier learning environments.
  • Tobacco-Free District Policies: Tobacco and vaping bans ensure safe and healthy school environments.
  • Nature Based Wellness: Integrate natural daylighting and outdoor learning spaces where it is feasible to support student wellness. Incorporate outdoor walking trails and quiet reflection spaces for students and staff.
