The No. 7 ranked Columbia Lady Eagles rallied from two 10-point, first-quarter deficits on the way to a 58-34 Region 5-2A girls’ high school basketball win over the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines at Columbia on Tuesday night.
Miller Grove (11-8, 7-3) led by as much as 10 twice in the first quarter as Kaeslyn Benjamin scored 13 points, including three from behind the three-point arc, as they built a 17-7 lead with 2:17 to play in the opening period.
Londyn Durden hit a three-pointer and Kendall Campbell hit two free throws and a put back basket in a 7-0 run that helped Columbia (19-5, 10-0) climb back within 19-15 going into the second quarter.
Durden had a steal to open the second period for an easy basket and Aalon Turner hit an old fashioned three-point play to give Columbia the lead for good at 20-19 with 6:38 left in the first half.
Baskets by Deasia Kelly and DeDe Spaulding along with two free throws by Durden completed an 11-0 run to open the second quarter as Columbia began to take over the game.
An 8-0 run in the final 1:55 of the half put the Eagles on top 35-22 as Spaulding Durden, Turner and Kendall Campbell scored two points each.
Columbia opened the second half with another 11-0 run kicked off by Kerselin Anderson’s steal and layup to open the half. Durden added five points (layup and three), and Turner converted two more baskets as the lead ballooned to 46-22 with 3:02 to play in the quarter.
Miller Grove’s first basket of the second half came on a rebound by Nariah Cato with 2:35 remaining. Columbia took 26-point lead into the fourth quarter and Miller Grove got no closer than 23 the rest of the way.
Durden scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Columbia in the game. Kendall Campbell contributed 12 points and nine rebounds and Aalon Turner added nine points and six rebounds.
Kaeslyn Benjamin had a team-high 18 points to lead Miller Grove. Arieyonna Christian added nine points and seven rebounds for the Wolverines.
