The Dunwoody Wildcats followed up their DeKalb County wrestling title by taking the Area 4-5A title this past weekend. The Wildcats also qualified 12 wrestlers for the State Sectional.

The Dunwoody Wildcat wrestling team added another trophy to the shelf last Saturday via an eleven-point (226.5-215.5) win over Woodward Academy in the Area 4-5A Wrestling Championships at Dunwoody.

Dunwoody collected three gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze while qualifying 12 wrestlers for the Class 5A Sectional A at Houston County coming up on Saturday.

Dunwoody got wins from Jared Katz (113), Alex McKissick (120) and Andrew Fidler (138). Fidler and 126 runner-up Charlie Rourk both hit the century mark in wrestling wins during the tournament.

Arabia Mountain made a strong showing with a fourth place finish at the meet led by Joshua Modenou’s gold medal victory in the 285 division. The Rams also has one silver medal winner and three bronze medals on the day. The Rams qualified eight for the sectional.

Lakeside was just 0.5 of point behind the Rams with a gold medal by Joe Austin in the 106 division. Chamblee finished sixth with gold medal wins by Simeon Davies (150) and Josiah Harper (157. Lakeside put six grapplers through to the sectional and Chamblee collected four state sectional entries.

DeKalb qualified 116 boys’ wrestlers for state sectional competition throughout the six areas the teams competed in last weekend.

Area 5-4A
Southwest DeKalb put up the best numbers by a DeKalb wrestling squad in the Area 5-4A Tournament with a second place finish behind St. Pius X at Druid Hills.

The Panthers lone gold medal came in the 285 division as Amir Ferguson won a gold to go with his county title a week earlier. Southwest DeKalb picked up one silver (Karmari Rivers-Childs, 113) and five bronze medals to make up its 116.5 points. The Panthers qualified nine wrestlers for the Class 4A Section A at Harris County on Saturday.

The Tucker Tigers finished fourth overall (107.5) led by gold medals by Imraan Mumin (150) and Maverick Armour (215) who both won their division at the county championships. Tucker qualified seven for the sectional.

Druid Hills wrestler Deonte Smith (126) also made it a county/area gold medal combo with his win at Area. Druid Hills put three wrestlers through to the sectional.

Lithonia finished fifth overall in the Area Tournament led by Raymario Earle’s gold as seven total Bulldogs are moving on to the state sectional.

Clarkston qualified three for the sectional including bronze medal winners Bahram Naimi (106) and Abdul Panjshiri (120).

Area 4-4A
The Martin Luther King Jr. Lions completed a run to the runner-up spot to Pace Academy in Area 4-4A while qualifying seven wrestlers for the Class 4A Section B at Cambridge this coming Saturday.

Julius Johnson (138) and Talute Suggs (144) captured the top prizes in their divisions to lead the Lions. King added one silver and two bronze medals to their performance.

Area 5-3A
Stone Mountain and Stephenson battled for third place in the Area 5-3A at Mt. Zion-Jonesboro High School with the Pirates edging out the Jaguars 198.5 to 189.5 to finish behind Luella (219) and Mt. Zion (200).

Stone Mountain used gold medal performances by Dontavious Perry (106) and Eric Barros (175) as they matched Dunwoody’s 12 state qualifiers for tops in DeKalb County. The Pirates collected four silver and four bronze medals along the way.

Stephenson topped five weight classes with gold medals from Artavus Hughes (120), Kyrin Matthews (126), Jalen Deggs (165), M’Khale Murdock (190) and Rommando Craddock (215). The Jaguars totaled nine wrestlers to qualify for state including two silver medal winners and one bronze finisher.

Cedar Grove’s Ja’kylan Henry (144) joined the state qualifiers with a bronze medal finish.

Area 5-2A
Sixteen DeKalb wrestlers advanced to state sectional competition out of Area 5-2A led by third-place Columbia with seven.

Columbia collected six Top Three finishes to collect 105 points to finish behind Lovett (227.5) and Salem (116). The Eagles were led by three-time county champ Thawbaan As-Siddiq who won the 144 class and Pharrell Griffin with a win at 175.

Redan came in fourth in the team standings to qualify six for state competition. The Raiders top finisher was Tristan Payne with a silver in 106 to go along with five bronze medal winners.

Miller Grove picked up three qualifiers led by silver medalists Tyler Bowden (165) and Demond Hutchins (190).

All 16 wrestlers are set to compete at the Class 2A Section A tournament at Columbus High School on Saturday.

Area 5-1A
McNair (7) and Towers (5) combined to qualify 12 wrestlers for Saturday’s Class 1A Section B tournament at Jeff Davis High School during competition at the Area 5-1A Tournament at Mt. Pisgah last weekend.

The Mustangs were led by silver medalists Houston Simmons (132) and Milek Adams (215). McNair also picked up three bronze medals during the competition.

Towers had a pair of medal winners in the five qualifying for state as Jeff Thomas won silver at 190 and Wilier Carter (165) took bronze.
