The 2023 DCSD Middle School Basketball Championships first round begins tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 1) at various sites of the highest seeded team. Varsity Championships move into the semifinals on Saturday at various sites.

The 2023 DCSD Middle School Basketball Championships first round begins tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 1) at various sites of the highest seeded team.

Regular season games wrapped up this past Saturday for the DeKalb County middle school basketball teams and now on to the DCSD Middle School Basketball Championships’ first round on Wednesday.

The Champion Chargers (13-0) wrapped up an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 seed from Region 2 with a 61-42 victory over the Columbia Eagles (2-11). Jackson Ushery led the way with a game-high 25 points for Champion. Columbia got a big 22-point game from Nolan Donahue.

BOYS RECAPS
Redan 68, Peachtree 46
The Redan Raiders (12-1) finished off the regular season with a 68-46 win over the Peachtree Patriots (5-8). Tristan Mitchell hit for 23 points (3 steals) and Amare Medhin hit for 20 points (5 assists, 3 steals).

Druid Hills 53, Henderson 30
The Druid Hills Dragons (9-4) picked up their ninth win on the season with a 53-30 win over the Henderson Cougars (3-10). Stone Richards was again the high man for the Dragons with 22 points. Henderson got 10 points from Hani Siddiqui and 8 from Joshua Mosley.

Cedar Grove 42, Stone Mountain 22
The Cedar Grove Saints (8-5) enter the county tournament as the defending champions and closed out the regular season with a 42-22 win over the Stone Mountain Pirates (3-10). Isaiah Cosby had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double and Kaeden Drake hit for 10 points in the win.

Chamblee 61, Freedom 45
The Chamblee Bulldogs (8-5) finished off the regular season by defeating the Freedom Rams (4-9) 61-45. Christopher Oliver led the way with 20 points followed Dante Cutillo and Eston McDow with 14 points each. Freedom was led by Usher Evanculla with 12 points, Mojo Ajobong with 11 points and Geordan Curry with 8 points.

Bethune 54, Sequoyah 13
The Bethune Lions (11-2) eighth graders wrapped up their regular season with a home victory of 54-13 over the Sequoyah Braves (0-13). Ke’shawn Briggs had 12 points (6 seals, 5 assists) and L’Markus Scott added 8 points.

Stephenson 43, Lithonia 38
The Stephenson Jaguars (7-6) knocked off the shorthanded Lithonia Bulldogs (9-4) 43-28 in a look at a first-round matchup on Wednesday in the county tournament. Lithonia’s Armani Myco hit for 14 points and Caleb Cooper added 12 more in the loss.

Chapel Hill 50, Tucker 34
The Chapel Hill Panthers (11-2) wrapped up a runner-up finish in Region 1 via a 50-34 win over the Tucker tigers (3-10). Just Taylor hit for a game-high 23 points to lead the Panthers.

Beacon Hill 42, Miller Grove 20
The Beacon Hill Bulldogs (5-8) completed the regular season with a 42-20 win over the Miller Grove Wolverines (4-9). Michael Pope and Isaiah Wright both finished with 12 points to lead the Bulldogs.

The Salem Lions (11-2) finished the regular season as the Region 2 runner-up to undefeated Champion with a 55-32 win over McNair (2-11).

GIRLS RECAPS
The Salem Lady Lions (13-0) ran their consecutive victory mark to 20 with a regular season ending 45-2 win over McNair (0-13). DeDe Spaulding hit for 11 points and Mya Perry knocked down 10 more as Salem finished up as the No. 1 seed in Region 2.

Chapel Hill 43, Tucker 16
The Chapel Hill Lady Panthers (11-2) defeated the Tucker Lady Tigers (1-12) 43-16 as they finished off a Region 1 regular season title. Avantey Gilreath had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double with three blocked shots for Chapel Hill. Mauri Barnes added 11 points (2 steals and Sanai Bryant 8 points (3 steals).

Stephenson 46, Lithonia 26
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars (12-1) picked up their 12th win against just one loss with a 46-26 victory over Lithonia (4-9). Loriel Murray had a game-high 19 points for Stephenson and Cyncere Sims-Turner added 9 points.

Redan 31, Peachtree 8
The Redan Lady Raiders (7-6) moved above .500 on the season via a 31-8 win over the Peachtree Lady Patriots (5-8). Saniya Gist put up a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double for Redan and Aubri Brooks tacked on 8 points.

Cedar Grove 42, Stone Mountain 17
The Cedar Grove Lady Saints (10-3) got into double figures in the win column by defeating Stone Mountain (3-10) 42-17 in the final regular season game. Ziryah Bell finished with a game-high 14 points (8 steals) while Imani Coleman (7 steals, 5 rebounds) and Ariiyahna Hinds-Perry (2 steals, 2 rebounds) both chipped in with 8 points apiece.

Chamblee 38, Freedom 27
The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-5 on the season with a 38-27 win over the Freedom Lady Rams (6-7). Sara Adekunle had a game-high 14 points for Chamblee while Alex Cary added 7 blocks and Lilly Harris had 5 steals. Freedom was led by Destiny Swint (8 points, 2 steals), Wanny Glady (6 points, 4 steals) and Genet Abatie (5 points, 2 assists).

Champion 55, Columbia 13
The Champion Lady Chargers (11-2) wrapped up their Region 2 runners-up finish with a 55-13 non-region win over the Columbia Eagles (6-7). Charmaine Owens put together a 16-point, 10 steals double-double to lead the way. Sanna Stanton added 10 points (5 rebounds, 6 steals) and Essence Greer scored 9 points with Jhia Primrose (6 points, 14 rebounds) and Lailah Cox (6 points, 5 rebounds) contributed to the win.

Other scores to wrap up the regular season included Beacon Hill (8-5) over Miller Grove (2-11) 29-19, Druid Hills (10-3) 38-22 over Henderson (4-9) and Bethune (8-5) 38-1 over Sequoyah (1-12).

The 2023 DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships Tournament gets underway tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 1) with 16 games on tap at various. Teams play for the right to move into Saturday’s quarterfinals round.
