A sixth inning rally was not enough for the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs to overcome a 5-0 deficit against the Loganville Red Devils in a 5-2 loss in the opening game of the Class 5A double elimination tournament in Columbus on Wednesday.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Chamblee rallied for two runs that started with one out as Rachel Runsick walked. Shea Parker singled to center and Kate Sarago singled to left to score Runsick to get Chamblee on the board.

Lily McCord’s groundout plated Parker to cut the lead to 5-2 with two out and Sarago on third. Loganville got out of the inning on a pop up by Rachel Axelson.

McCord set the Red Devils down in order in the bottom of the sixth and the Bulldogs had three outs left. A three-up and three-down inning by the Loganville pitcher ended the game.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs (26-4) into the loser’s bracket with a date against the Cambridge Bears (25-8), 8-0 losers to Northside, Columbus, tonight at 7:00 at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus. Chamblee is 4-1 against common opponents and Cambridge is 2-1. Both teams were shutout by Wesleyan (Chamblee 0-1, Cambridge 0-6) in the only losses.

Loganville (29-5) took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning as Kollin was hit-by-a-pitch, stole second and third and scored on a groundout to short by Waites for the 1-0 lead.

Loganville added two more runs in the second as an error opened the door for RBI singles by Kollins and Canady to push the lead to 3-0.

Sampson had a two-run single just past a diving Savannah Russell in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.
