The American Association of Adapted Sports Programs wheelchair basketball state title run by the DeKalb Silver Streaks came up short in a 32-13 loss to the undefeated Houston County Sharks on Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.

The Silver Streaks entered the game with a 5-2 record after defeating the Clayton Eagles 26-14 in the semifinals with the opportunity to try to knock off the Houston Sharks (7-0) 36-4 winners over the West Georgia Wolverines (0-8) in the semis.

Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period (1 of 6 eight-minute quarters) and were up 8-0 in the second before the Silver Streaks got on the scoreboard. Najee Smothers got DeKalb on the board with a basket to cut the lead to 8-6.

DeKalb (5-3) would go scoreless the rest of the second period and trailed 10-2 heading into final period of the first half.

The two teams scored four points each in the third quarter as Houston held a 14-6 advantage at the half. Najee Smothers scored all four DeKalb points in the third quarter to finish the half with six.

Houston held DeKalb scoreless in the fourth quarter but only extended the lead to 18-6 with two quarters to play.

Cameron Smothers had a three-pointer in the fifth quarter and Najee Smothers added another basket, but the Silver Steaks still trailed 24-11 going into the final period of play.

Najee Smothers finished with 10 points for the game with the only DeKalb basket in the sixth quarter.

Houston (8-0) powered by 16 points from Adonis Brown closed out the game for the 32-13 victory. It was Houston’s ninth state title in the past 10 seasons.

The Silver Streaks have finished as state runners-up twice this year in losses to Houston. They dropped a 9-2 decision in Handball in the fall.

The spring wheelchair football season begins on Saturday, March 19 as the Silver Streaks travel to Houston County’s Bonaire Middle School for a doubleheader against the Sharks (11:00 am) and the Clayton Eagles (1:00 pm).
