The finals for the DCSD Middle School and Junior Varsity Basketball Championships are set for Saturday at Miller Grove High School.

Junior Varsity opens the day at 10:00 am as the Arabia Mountain Lady Rams (10-0) host the Columbia Lady Eagles (9-1) as the pair picked up semifinal victories on Wednesday to advance to a Region 1 matchup in the finals.

Arabia Mountain, the No. 1 seed out of Region 1, knocked off the Region 2 No. 2 seed Stephenson Lady Jaguars (7-4) 38-23 to reach the title game. Columbia, the No. 2 seed out of Region 1, advanced with a 52-31 victory over the Region 2 No. 1 seed Stone Mountain Lady Pirates (8-3).

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The DCSD Middle School Basketball Championships return after missing 2021 and are set for 2:00 pm (girls) and 3:30 pm (boys) at Miller Grove High School following the Junior Varsity Championships.

Undefeated Champion (15-0), the Region 2 No. 1 seed, and Salem (13-1), the Region 3 No. 1 seed, face off for the girls’ title on Saturday afternoon.

Champion, which won the last tournament title in 2020 against Stephenson, rolled to a 52-16 victory over Chapel Hill (14-2). The win was fueled by Charmaine Owens (13 points, 6 steals) and Chance Alexander (12 points). Ryann Chaney (7 points, 12 rebounds) and Jhia Primrose (6 points, 7 rebounds) were big on the boards for the Lady Chargers in the win.

Salem cruised to a 47-16 win over the Region 2 No. 2 seeded Stephenson Lady Jaguars (12-4) to move into the title game. Shanya Heath hit for a game-high 21 points and Mya Perry added 14 for Salem in the win. Cyncere Sims-Turner had 7 points and Kamryn Larkin added 5 for Stephenson in the loss.

The boys’ final has Region 4 co-champs Cedar Grove Saints (14-2) and Columbia Eagles (14-2) meeting for the third time this season to decide the championship.

Cedar Grove won a thrilling, come-from-behind semifinal meeting with the Chamblee Bulldogs (13-3) 54-51 on Wednesday night. Chamblee was up eight at the half after putting together a 5-0 run to end the second quarter.

Trailing by as much as 12 in the third quarter the Saints rallied to within three with one quarter to play. Cedar Grove would outscore the Bulldogs 11-6 in the fourth quarter and took its first lead of the game with four seconds to play on an Emanual Green layup to make it 52-51. Green would add two free throws to seal the game at 54-51.

Columbia got past the Bethune Lions (9-7) 34-28 to move in the championship game. Bethune had upset the Eagles 33-32 back in January and again battled the Eagles before falling.
