A touchdown pass and two-point conversion in the final two seconds rallied the McNair Mustangs to a 16-14 victory over the Cedar Grove Saints in DeKalb Middle School Region 4 action last Saturday at Godfrey Stadium.

Previously undefeated Cedar Grove (4-1, 2-1) was leading 14-8 on the back of a 150-yard rushing, two touchdown performance by D’Corey Holt and a two-point conversion by Jamarcus Harper (75 yards rushing).

The Mustangs (3-0-1, 3-0-1) had just two minutes to drive 60 yards and with the clock ticking down under 20 seconds quarterback Keyontae Phillips found Shyree Graham running free to the end zone following a collision of two Saints defenders to tie the game at 14-14 with just two seconds left on the clock.

Phillips completed the comeback from a 14-0 third quarter deficit by running in the two-point conversion to put McNair ahead 16-14. The kickoff ran out the clock propelling McNair into first place in Region 4 and spot in the Trail to the Title Middle School Football Playoffs. It will be McNair’s first playoff appearance since first round loss in 2010.

Cedar Grove takes on Chapel Hill (4-0-1, 2-0-1) this Saturday with big playoff implications on the line in Region 4. Chapel Hill defeated Bethune 34-6 this past weekend behind a big touchdown pass play from Braylon Carter to Caleb Winfrey and rushing touchdowns by Zyeed Conwell and Isaiah Jackson.

Lithonia (3-1, 2-1) set up a big matchup with Miller Grove (3-2, 1-2) by knocking off Freedom 6-0 at Avondale this past weekend. The game settled in to a defensive struggle after a miscue on the opening kickoff led to the Bulldogs scoring on a 43-yard touchdown run by Steven Walls. The Lithonia defense was led in its shutout effort by CJ Daniels (6 tackles) and Ja’Marius Duncan (4 tackles, 1 INT, 1 sack).

Champion (3-3, 2-2) evened its mark on the season with a tough 16-12 win over Stone Mountain. Big Marcus Moten (three tackles for a loss) got Champion on the board first doing his “Refrigerator” Perry imitation down on the goal line by bulling his way into the end zone. Albert Gooding and Jackson Cole hooked up on touchdown pass with Gooding and Huff added two-point conversions via the run. Bryce Belise had four tackles for a loss including two sacks to go with five tackles each from Bryce Boatwright and Antwon Francis.

Stone Mountain’s Isaac Graves closed the gap to 8-6 with a short touchdown run after a big interception return by Allen Sanders down inside the Champion 10-yard line. Victor Folks had a fumble recovery for a touchdown to make the final score of 16-12.

Salem (6-0, 4-0) completed its regular season play undefeated with a Region 3 championship in tow with a 36-0 victory over Miller Grove (3-2, 1-2). Jeleel Baugh rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns to lead Salem to the win.

Henderson (4-1, 2-0) is set to go the playoffs with a Region 1 title in hand and a regular season ending 24-0 win over Sequoyah (1-4, 1-1).
