Maci Yeager’s penalty kick found the right corner of the goal to propel the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs into the Class 5A girls’ state playoffs Sweet 16 in a penalty kick-overtime thriller over the Jackson County Lady Panthers at North DeKalb Stadium on Tuesday night.

Delaney Weatherly who had given Jackson County a late 1-0 lead in regulation tied the penalty kick session at 4-4, but the Lady Bulldogs had missed one penalty kick leaving Chamblee’s Yeager with the opportunity to seal the match.

Yeager faced up against Jackson County goalkeeper Avery Wartell, who had 13 saves in the game, and was able to find the net with the game winner.

Chamblee (11-4-0) made good on all of its penalty kicks as Kara Croone, Molly Silverman, Meagan Woo and Reagan Kuehne joined Yeager with penalty kick makes.

Kennedy Habeeb, Kelsey O’Connor and Kristen Wiley converted their penalty kicks for Jackson County (8-7-1).

The two teams played the first 67 minutes and 11 seconds without a goal as the two goalies and defenses kept making plays including 10 by Wartell for Jackson County and nine by Chamblee’s Alexis Harris.

Jackson County’s Delaney Weatherly broke the tie with 12:49 to play as she picked up the deflection off a corner to score the go-ahead goal.

Chamblee would come back with 7:11 to play using a corner kick by Sarah Washburn to knot the game at 1-1. Washburn’s kick was hit to within a few yards in front of the goal and Reagan Drummond found the net to tie the game.

Wartell kept the game going into overtime with a save as the clock ticked down to two seconds remaining.

The two teams played scoreless in the 20 minutes of overtime as both goalies turned away shots.

Both teams hit their first three penalty kicks, but a shot high on Jackson County’s fourth attempt opened the door for Chamblee.

Chamblee must go on the road to face No. 1 ranked Blessed Trinity (17-1-1), a 10-0 winner over North Springs on Tuesday, with a tentative play date of Monday, April 26.

There are three DeKalb boys’ teams in action on Wednesday. Dunwoody (9-7-2) at Forsyth Central (12-4-0) at 7: pm; Cross Keys (10-4-0) at Clarke Central (11-4-1) at a time to be determined; and Cedar Grove (8-3-0) at Oconee County (11-2-2) at 7:00 pm.
