Three teams battled the weather to survive with undefeated records in local baseball action during Week 3 of the 2020 high school season as rain continued to come down.

Coach Timothy Jones and the Stephenson Jaguars led the way, posting a 2-0 mark that included an exciting 1-0 victory over Southwest DeKalb in the first game of the 14th annual Best of DeKalb Baseball Classic Feb. 29 at Stephenson. The Jaguars needed eight innings to prevail over the Panthers and move to 3-1 overall on the year. Stephenson also knocked off Arabia Mountain by a 6-3 margin Feb. 27.

Decatur took care of Martin Luther King Jr. in a 14-1 decision in the second game of the Best of DeKalb Feb. 29.

Coach Brandon Jackson’s Cedar Grove Saints went 1-0 last week and moved to 2-5 overall on the year with an 11-1 triumph Feb. 26.

Coach Eric Love’s Druid Hills Red Devils likewise registered a perfect 1-0 week, rolling past Miller Grove by a 20-5 margin to move to 3-1 overall.

Druid Hills only managed three hits but still crossed the plate 20 times in a 20-5 home decision over Miller Grove Feb. 26. Sophomore Cody Akins served as the main offensive star for the Red Devils in the contest, finishing 2-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Junior Malachi Gilbert also turned in a solid effort at the plate, going 1-2 with three runs scored, two RBI and one stolen base. Junior Joseph Weingartner garnered the pitching triumph, striking out three and allowing two earned runs, two hits and four walks while pitching the full three innings.

Towers collected eight hits as a team in defeating Clarkston by a 12-3 margin Feb. 27 at home. Sophomore Jari Williams shined brightest on the individual end for the Titans, going 3-3 with two doubles, three stolen bases and one RBI. Senior Jevon Freeman (2-3; 2 RS, 1 RBI) and sophomore Demetress Broughton (2-3; 3 RS; 3 RBI; 1 SB) also delivered two hits each in the victory, while freshman Isaiah Logan went 1-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Broughton also picked up the pitching triumph, striking out five and allowing two earned runs, two hits and three walks over two and one third innings.

Chamblee received a strong pitching effort from senior Michael Sarzen in a 4-1 road loss to GAC Feb. 25. Sarzen started and went the first four innings on the mound, striking out five and allowing six hits, two earned runs and one walk. Junior Patrick Scott also turned in two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts. Junior Isaac Harkins (1-3), sophomore Connor Pressnall (1-3) and sophomore Leon Cohen (1-2) collected one hit each on the offensive end for the Bulldogs.

Junior Chad Bigby provided the main offensive highlight for Clarkston in a 12-4 road defeat at the hands of Towers Feb. 27. Bigby went 1-2 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Eh Doe Shee also went 1-3 at the plate.

Senior Dante Alexander (1-2) managed the lone hit for Lakeside in a 10-0 loss at Decatur Feb. 25. Junior Will Thomas allowed three earned runs over three innings in turning in the strongest of three pitching efforts for the Vikings in the contest.
