Middle School Basketball Championships moving into semifinals on Wednesday minus both defending champs.

The 2020 DeKalb County School District Middle School Basketball Championships move into the semifinals on Wednesday with new champions assured after the last defending champ was eliminated on Saturday.

The defending boys’ champion Stephenson was eliminated earlier last week to open the door for the crowning of a new title holder on Saturday, at 2:30 pm at Miller Grove High School.

One of the semifinalists is Region 4 champ Columbia (13-1) which defeated Miller Grove (10-5) 48-43 behind the play of Sanchez Brown (15 points) and Joshua Mickell (12 points). The Eagles travel to Champion to face the Chargers (14-1) at 5:00 pm in in one boys’ semifinal.

Champion is coming off a 58-45 win over Peachtree (10-5) in the quarterfinals last Saturday. The Chargers were led by Joshua Westbrook, Jordon Miller and Arrington Watkins in a solid team effort for the win.

Region 2 co-runner-up Stone Mountain (11-4) moved into the semifinals via a 62-40 win over Region 1 co-champ Chamblee (10-5). Jakhi Howard had an impressive game for the Pirates with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Malik Hinton added 15 points and 7 assists and Daelin Porter put up 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Stone Mountain will travel to Salem (13-2), a 45-43 winner over Region 2 co-runner-up Druid Hills (10-5), for a 5:00 pm tip and an opportunity to play for the title.

Region 1 co-champ Chamblee (14-1) knocked the defending 2019 titlist Champion (8-7) out of the playoffs with a 34-30 victory to advance to the semifinals. Champion got 11 points from Ebony Bumbrey and 9 points from Saniyah Rice in the loss.

Chamblee’s semifinals opponent is the Lithonia Lady Bulldogs (13-2). Lithonia put together and all-around team effort to knock off Druid Hills (8-7) 33-23 to advance to the semis. Chamblee and Lithonia tip off their semifinal match at 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

Chapel Hill (15-0) remained undefeated by running past Freedom (9-6) 42-32 to advance to the semifinals as the only undefeated team in the postseason.

Region 1 co-champ Tucker (14-1) is the next Chapel Hill opponent as the Lady Tigers went into Stephenson to defeat the Region 2 champ 48-33 to advance. The two winners face off at Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
