Sequoyah breaks 89-game losing streak with 16-13 win over Stone Mountain.

The Sequoyah Lady Chieftains middle school girls’ basketball team broke an 89-game losing streak with a thrilling 16-13 win over the Stone Mountain Lady Pirates on Saturday.

Sequoyah’s last win came during the 2013 season, but Coach Rhathelia Stroud’s club (1-7) rebounded from a 37-0 shutout at the hands of Druid Hills last Wednesday to knock off Stone Mountain behind the play of Leslie Abundis who had five points and four rebounds to lead the way. Maria Guzman played a big hand in holding Stone Mountain to 13 points as she came away with six steals.

McNair 33, Cedar Grove 23
McNair evened its record to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in Region 4 play with a 33-23 win over Cedar Grove (1-9, 0-7) on Saturday. JahNaesia Spiers had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks to lead Cedar Grove while teammate Chayla Wright added 6 points.

Chapel Hill 39, Miller Grove 19
Chapel Hill (10-0, 6-0) picked up two wins last week to remain undefeated on the season. They first defeated Miller Grove 39-19 and followed up with a 42-17 win over Bethune in Region 4. Brooklyn Scrubb had 13 of the 19 points for Miller Grove in the loss.

Lithonia 40, Freedom 28
The Lithonia Lady Bulldogs upped their record to 8-2 overall and 5-1 atop the Region 3 standings with a sweep of Region 3 foes Freedom (40-28) and Miller Grove (27-8). Lithonia got 15 points from Alika Daugherty and 10 from Aniya Waller in the win over Freedom (6-4, 3-4) while Daughtery hit for 11 and Jonasia Davis 8 in the win over Miller Grove (4-5, 1-4).

Druid Hills 35, Champion 30
Druid Hills (6-4, 3-2) picked up a big Region 2 win 35-30 over Champion (6-3, 4-2) on Saturday. Champion was led by Saniyah Rice with 12 points and Raven Robinson 11 points while Ebony Bumbrey added 7 in the loss.

Champion 46, Stone Mountain 6
Saniyah Rice had 12 points to lead Champion to a 46-6 Region 2 win over Stone Mountain (0-11, 0-4) last Wednesday. Raven Robinson added 10 pints and Kennedi Watson 8 for Champion.

In boys’ action last week Miller Grove upped its record to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in Region 3 (second place) with wins of 45-30 over Chapel Hill (2-8) and a 41-26 Region 3 victory over Lithonia (5-5, 3-3).

Jonathan McBride had 12 points and seven steals to lead Miller Grove against Chapel Hill. Jakharre Barnes added 11 points and 12 rebounds while Marion Hopkins grabbed 8 rebounds and had 3 blocks. In the win over Lithonia Travian Callaway hit for 18 points to lead the way while Hopkins added 7 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Champion 38, Druid Hills 37
Champion (9-0, 6-0) escaped its first loss of the season with some big plays down the stretch in an exciting finish of their 38-37 Region 3 tussle against Druid Hills (6-4, 2-3). Peyton Marshall’s two big rebounds late benefited Kevin Harper for two baskets as Champion took the lead. Druid Hills shot a three-pointer with five seconds to play, but it was no good as Champion held on for the win.

Stephenson 42, Henderson 26
The Stephenson Jaguars (2-6) picked up a 42-26 non-region win over the Henderson Cougars (4-7) on Saturday. Jeremiah Ruffin led the way for Stephenson with 13 points.

Lithonia 54, Freedom 28
Lithonia (5-5, 3-3) rolled past Freedom (1-9, 0-7) 54-38 to help keep a hold on third place in Region 3 play. Cortez Vaughn hit for 12 points and Bryce Blackburn added 11 for the Bulldogs in the win.

Druid Hills 77, Sequoyah 13
Druid Hills (6-4) took a 77-13 non-region victory over Sequoyah last Wednesday. Josiah Lawson led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds while Noah Brocklebank added 18 points of his own and Josiah Marsh contributed 12 points and 8 rebounds in the win.
