A dominant defensive effort by the Champion Chargers helped seal the programs first ever region title and first ever undefeated regular season in a 38-0 victory over the Stone Mountain Pirates (0-5, 0-3) at Avondale Stadium on Saturday.
The Chargers’ defense caused four turnovers (two interceptions, two fumbles) on the way to the team’s fourth shutout of the season.
Champion scored three times on the ground on two rushing touchdowns by Channing Henderson and a third by Arrington Watkins. Julian Shanks threw for touchdowns to Jordan Miller and John Cineas.
The Chargers (6-0, 4-0) head into a bye week as the regular season wraps up this weekend and will prepare for their October 19th first round playoff game against the Region 3 runner-up at 1:30 pm at North DeKalb Stadium.
Miller Grove 22, Salem 14
A highly contested game for the lead in the Region 3 standings had the Miller Grove Wolverines come out on top 22-14 over the Salem Lions on Saturday at Hallford Stadium.
Ali Dargon led the Wolverines (5-0, 3-0) with a pair of touchdowns in the game. Ta’jon Corbitt added another score for Miller Grove as the Wolverines moved one step closer to an undefeated regular season and the Region 3 title. Miller Grove last went undefeated in the regular season in 2009, but had undefeated Trail to the Title seasons in 2006 (8-0) and 2008 (9-0).
Miller Grove can clinch the title and the first undefeated regular season since 2009 as the Wolverines take on Lithonia (3-2, 2-1) on Saturday at Godfrey Stadium with kickoff set for 10:00 am.
Salem (4-2, 3-1) is close to sealing a Trail to the Title playoff berth as they had into a bye week after the loss. Jadan Baugh was again big for the Lions last week as he rushed for just under 100 yards, scored two touchdowns and contributed six tackles on defense. Stephen Maynard and Sakaun Foster also made some big plays on offense for the Lions.
Defensively, Andrew Woods and Kelvon York provided some big plays against Miller Grove to keep the Lions within striking distance.
Salem has not been in the playoffs since winning a first round game in 2012 and advancing to the semifinals for the third time (2009 and 2004). The Lions fell in the championship game in 2004 to an undefeated Stephenson team.
