2018 DCSD JV BOYS CHAMPIONS MILLER GROVE WOLVERINES

A 10-2 run in the second quarter propelled the Miller Grove Wolverines to their fifth consecutive DCSD Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball Tournament title 50-38 over the Arabia Mountain Rams on Championship Saturday at Cedar Grove Middle School on Saturday.

The Rams (9-4) were the Region 4 champs and rallied from an 18-8 early second quarter deficit to 18-13 behind a three-pointer by Frank Champion and two free throws by Muhammad Diallo.

The Wolverines (9-4), the No. 2 seed from Region 3, got five points from Michael Lewis with two baskets inside and a free throw. Shomik Shahjuhan hit a reverse layup driving the baseline and Solomon Holmes added a pair of free throws as the Wolverines took a 28-15 lead at the half.

Ballard added a steal to go with a Champion free throw as Arabia Mountain tried to mount a comeback closing within 39-31. Champion would cut it to seven (41-34) with an old fashioned three-point play with 2:36 to play.

Miller Grove’s Tournament MVP Tyriek Boyd had seven points in the fourth quarter and Shahjuhan went four-for-four at the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the 50-38 victory.

Boyd finished with 14 points and five rebounds to lead the Wolverines while Zyair Green added eight points and eight rebounds. Arabia Mountain got 13 points and eight rebounds from Champion in the loss.
