Middle School basketball teams opened the 2018 season last Saturday with 36 teams hitting the court in season openers.

The 2018 DCSD Middle School Basketball season tipped off on Saturday as six schools swept doubleheaders on the opening day of action.

Region 1 picked up two of the sweeps as Henderson and Peachtree came away victorious in both boys’ and girls’ play.

Henderson went on the road to Region 3’s Stone Mountain and came away with the sweep.

The Lady Cougars opened the doubleheader with a 38-27 over the Lady Pirates to open their season at 1-0. Adia Bouldin hit for 12 points and added 2 steals and 2 assists in the game. Lacey Wimer added 9 points and 1 steal in the victory.

Malachi Cloud got in double figures with 10 points to lead the Cougars to a season opening 34-15 road win over the Pirates. William Parker chipped in 8 points to aid the Henderson cause.

Peachtree got a home court sweep of the Druid Hills Dragons as the boys’ and girls’ squads opened the year at 1-0. Justin Planes hit for 21 points in the 54-47 victory in the boys’ contest. The Lady Patriots rolled to a 60-10 win in the opener.

Region 2 contender Champion picked up a home sweep of Region 1’s Chamblee on Saturday. The Chargers opened 1-0 on the season with a thrilling 42-41 overtime victory over the defending county champions Chamblee Bulldogs. The Lady Chargers ran their consecutive win streak to 35 with a 57-7 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Region 4’s Chapel Hill picked up a home court sweep of Region 3’s Redan on Saturday. The Lady Panthers rolled to a 75-5 win over the Lady Raiders in the opener. The Panthers had tough opener with Redan pulling out a 27-25 victory on Courtney Forrest’s game winner at the buzzer.

Lithonia representing Region 3 swept Columbia out of Region 4 on the road on Saturday. The home-standing Lady Eagles fell 30-16 despite the offensive performance of Erica Richardson and the defensive play of Tiara Hill. The Bulldogs made it a 2-0 night for Lithonia easing to a 56-14 win over the Eagles.

Stephenson gave Region 2 its second sweep of the opening day of play taking a pair at home against Tucker. The Lady Jaguars rolled to a 49-9 win the opener while the Jaguars picked up a 10-point victory 34-24 over the Tigers.

The Salem Lions overcame a 21 point, 6 rebound and 3 steal performance by Cedar Grove’s Xavier Matioshi to pull out a 45-43 win over the Saints. Cedar Grove won the girls’ game 49-4 to open the season at 1-0.
