DeKalb County had nine more teams earn state tournament berths on Tuesday night bringing the total to 13 with 11 teams playing tonight (Wednesday) with playoff berths on the line.

The Region 4-6A Tournament at Tucker produced four of the nine state playoff teams with the Stephenson Lady Jaguars (18-8) the first to punch their ticket to the state tournament with a 50-40 victory over Mundy’s Mill (12-13).

Trailing by as much as six in the third quarter, Stephenson needed someone to step up on offense. Nikki Culbreath came through with two-three pointers in the final 36 seconds of the third quarter, the second banking in at the buzzer to give Stephenson a 39-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Madison Jackson’s three off the glass and Naomi Holloway’s old fashioned three-point play keyed a 10-0 run for Stephenson as the Lady Jags took control in the fourth quarter.

The win extended Stephenson’s state playoff appearance streak to 18 consecutive years, the last miss coming in 1999.

The Tucker Lady Tigers (19-6) rolled into the semifinals against Stephenson with a 63-37 win over Charles Drew (6-16). It gives Tucker its fifth consecutive state tournament berth.

Tucker and Stephenson were both successful on the boys’ side as well with both teams advancing to face off in the semifinals on Friday. The Tigers (16-9) rolled to a 72-38 win over Charles Drew (6-19) for their fifth consecutive state tournament berth.

The Jaguars (16-9) knocked off Mundy’s Mill (11-15) 67-58 to earn their state tournament berth. Stephenson returns to the state tournament in 2017 after missing out a year ago which ended a nine-year run.

Cedar Grove has been playing basketball since 1977 and this marks just the 10th time for the team to win 15 or more games, the time was a 15-14 record in that 2010 season.

Redan collected its 18th consecutive state tournament berth matching Stephenson’s run as the Lady Raiders (17-6) defeated Towers (5-13) 61-31.
