The Dunwoody Lady Wildcats advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Class 5A Girls’ State Tennis Tournament with a 3-1 victory over North Atlanta on Wednesday at Dunwoody.

It is the third consecutive season for the Lady Wildcats (13-4) to reach the second round of state tournament play.

Lala Hamza picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles to get the Lady Wildcats rolling.

Allie Puckett and Jaydra von Behren teamed up for a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles by the team of Ashton Harbin and Gracie Ackaway clinched the victory.

In other Class 5A girls’ action, the Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers finished their season at 10-10 overall with a 5-0 loss to defending champion Cambridge.

The Chamblee Bulldogs lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Cartersville in the first round of the Class 4A Boys’ State Tournament.

Chase Starks won a three-setter 4-6, 6-1 3-1 (retired) at No. 2 singles and Dixon Hall and Jacob Busch took a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs to account for the two wins.

The Towers Lady Titans earned their first ever state tournament berth as the No. 4 seed out of Region 4-3A and went on the road to play No. 1 seed Savannah Arts Academy.

Towers finished the season at 11-4 overall with a 3-0 defeat in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Dunwoody Wildcats moved into the second round with a win on Monday over Cass and host Camden County, a 3-0 winner over Houston County on Wednesday, and host an 11:00 am match at Dunwoody on Monday (4/25).

The Chamblee Lady Wildcats are set to travel to West Laurens, a 5-0 winner over New Hampstead on Wednesday, with the date and time to be announced.
