The DeKalb County School District renewed the Junior Varsity Track Championships in 2015 after a 15-year hiatus to highlight some of the top underclassmen competing in track.
The 2016 Championships begin at 4:00 pm today at Godfrey Stadium as the field events open competition.
The Stephenson Jaguars captured seven gold medals on the way to a 117-108 win over Lakeside in a highly contest boys’ championship a year ago.
Previs Seldon and Terence Moody shined for the Jaguars a year ago as both came away with two individual gold medals. Seldon captured gold in the shot put (35-06.75) and discus (98-04.50) to give Stephenson a lead heading into the track events.
Moody had half the Stephenson gold medals in the track events with victories in the 100 meter dash (11.40) and 200 meter dash (23.08).
A sweep of the top two spots in the 100 meter hurdles pushed the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines to close the gap on the way to an exciting 113.5-102 win over the Stephenson Lady Jaguars in the girls’ JV Championships.
Trailing by 13.5 points following the 100 meter dash, Miller Grove used the one-two finish of Alexcia Ayers (17.69) and Jakeeyah Seymour (18.32) to pull Miller Grove within 2.5 points (80-77.5) with four events left.
The Lady Wolverines were clinging to a 91.5-90 advantage with three events remaining and again it was the hurdles that put distance between the two teams as Miller Grove’s Alyssia Bagot took silver (51.16) and Jakeeyah Seymour was third (51.49) to score 14 to seal the victory with one event to run.
