Columbia’s Jalen Cobb got hot from the three-point line at the right time for the Eagles to lead his team to a 52-47 Region 6-4A home win on Friday.

The Raiders trailed 37-32 with 7:31 to play in the game as Lorenzo McGhee fed Serrod Little for an easy layup.

Ashaki Powell went to work on offense for the Raiders at that point to score back-to-back baskets on an offensive rebound and a nice inbounds pass from Tyonn Stuckey to close the gap to 37-36 with 6:32 remaining.

Cobb who had a three-pointer in the third period then heated up from outside the arc hitting back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor with assists from teammates Rodriguez Dennis and Justin Longstreet to push the lead back out to seven (43-36) with 5:18 to play.

Powell got inside again on another feed from Stuckey and Stuckey made a steal for a break-away basket to trim the lead to 43-40 with 3:41 to play.

Cobb answered again with a long three from the right side and McGhee grabbed an offensive rebound for a put back to make it 48-40 in favor of the Eagles with 2:38 to play.

Leading 48-41 with 1:31 to play, Cobb extended the lead to 51-41 with his fifth three-pointer of the second half to all but seal the victory.

Strickland Gray sandwiched a Darryl Moody offensive put back with a pair of drives to the basket as the Raiders trimmed the lead to 52-47, but only 20 seconds remained in the game as the Eagles (4-3) held on for the victory.

The Eagles had rallied from 10-4 deficit to a 23-17 lead in the first half by going to the boards and putting together a 19-7 run in the final 8:59 of the half led by Justin Longstreet who opened the second quarter with a three-pointer on the way to eight points in the period.

Cobb finished the game with 19 points and 7 rebounds to lead all scorers and Longstreet finished with 14 for the Eagles.

Redan (5-3) was led by Tyonn Stuckey with 14 points with Ashaki Powell added a double-double of 0 points and 11 rebounds.

(G) Redan 38, Columbia 22
Senior Taylor Tucker and the Redan Lady Raider defense took over in the third quarter to put away the Columbia Lady Eagles 38-22 in Region 6-4A girls’ action in the opener at Columbia on Friday.

Redan (7-0) was holding a 28-21 lead heading into the final period after being outscored 8-6 in the third quarter.

The Lady Raiders’ defense clamped down on the Lady Eagles (2-3) in final quarter forcing seven turnovers and contesting every shot. As the defense was taking control, Tucker went to work driving to the basket which resulted in three points from the free throw line and a pair of layups.

Redan outscored Columbia 10-1 in the final period to win by 16.

Columbia led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter on a drive to the basket by Keshawn White with three seconds left in the period.

Tucker who had four of Redan’s five points in the first quarter was a big factor in Redan taking a 22-13 lead at the half. She hit for four points in a 7-0 run to open the second quarter for Redan as the Lady Raiders took the lead for good at 12-8.

Amanda Thompkins hit one of two free throws to pull Columbia within 12-11 with 3:37 to play in the half when Tucker struck for two quick baskets in a minute’s time to push the lead to 16-11.

Jocelyn Small scored on a layup on a pass from Kia Smith following Smith’s steal to make it 22-11 with 57 seconds left in the first half.

Ilia Mathis converted both ends of a one-and-one from the free throw line to pull the Lady Eagles within 22-13 at the break.

Taylor Tucker finished with a game-high 21 points and 7 rebounds to lead Redan while teammate Bria’Allen McIver added 11 points.
