Cross Keys traveled to Lakeside on Tuesday night as the two kicked off the 2015-16 high school basketball regular season with a sweep of the girls’ and boys’ games by Lakeside.

The Lady Vikings opened the night with Tyja Traore putting together a double-double (12 points, 15 rebounds) to lead Lakeside to a 55-21 victory over the Lady Indians.

Cross Keys’ Yuyan Ke’s three-pointer from the right wing cut a 6-0 Lakeside lead in half with 2:52 left in the first quarter, but it would be the last points for the Lady Indians for the next eight minutes and 36 seconds.

Mashayla Brown’s steal and layup started a 16-0 run for Lakeside and Traore followed with a layup on an assist from Katherine Spetseris made it 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Brown, who put up 12 points in the game, finished the run that included six different scorers with a three-pointer to make it 22-3 with 2:46 left in the first half.

Kahmiya McField ended the drought for Cross Keys by hitting one of two free throws at the 2:16 mark of the second quarter. McField would add two more free throws in the first half on the way to 10 points in the game.

Anne Elizabeth Heyse ended the half with an offensive rebound (1 of 15 in the quarter for Lakeside) she put back in the basket for a 26-6 halftime lead.

Traore would collect eight of her 12 points on the night in the third quarter as the Lady Vikings (1-0) continued to pull away to a 49-9 lead. Cross Keys only score of the quarter was a three-pointer by McField at the 7:25 mark as the Lady Indians went cold from the floor.

Temitope Igbineweka pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lady Indians who open the season 0-1.

Lakeside 59, Cross Keys 32
Bennett Fahsel hit for 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Lakeside Vikings to a 59-32 season opening win over the Cross Keys Indians.

Fahsel had a drive to basket and one of his three-pointers early in the first quarter as the Vikings jumped out to a 9-2 lead.

The Indians responded with a basket and two free throws by Jason Tham and a steal by Trey Myers cut the lead to 9-8 with 2:22 left in the first quarter.

Nathan Reid’s layup on an assist by Sean Atwater and then a drive for dunk sent Lakeside in to the second quarter up 13-8.

Cross Keys’ Jeremiah Cross drained a three-pointer early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 15-11, but a pair of free throws by Fahsel and an old fashioned three-point play by Reid extended the Vikings’ lead back to 20-11.

Atwater would score six points in the final 4:26 of the half to give the Vikings a 30-20 advantage at the half. Tham kept Cross Keys within 10 with a drive to the basket with 31 seconds left in the half.

The Indians came out of the half and could not get a shot to fall as several rimmed out. The Vikings took advantage to score 23 points behind Martin Haggray’s 6, Atwater’s 5 and Jayvon Tate’s 4 to take a 53-20 lead into the final quarter.

Myers would hit for 7 of his 12 points in the game in the fourth quarter, but the Indians could not overcome the cold shooting third quarter.

Lakeside’s Tate would join Fahsel in double figures with a 10 point/12 rebound double-double for the Vikings (1-0). Tham would finish with 12 points for Cross Keys (0-1) to tie Myers for the team high.
