The Dunwoody Wildcats are the lone surviving DeKalb tennis following their 3-0 win over North Springs in the second round of the Class 5A boys’ State Tennis Playoffs on Monday.

The Wildcats improved to 19-0 on the season behind wins at No. 2 singles by Luke Bynum (12-2) 6-2, 6-0, No. 1 doubles Will Munger/Matthew Mousouri (6-3) 6-0, 6-0 and No. 2 doubles tandem of JT Melton/Daniel Bynum (7-0) 6-0, 6-1.

Dunwoody advances to the Elite Eight for the second time in three seasons and will host River Ridge this afternoon (Tuesday) at 4:00 pm. River Ridge, the Region 7-5A No. 2 seed advanced by knocking off Region 5-5A No. 1 seed Allatoona 3-0 in the second round.

The Dunwoody Lady Wildcats (14-4-1) had their season come to an end in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs with a 5-0 loss to Riverwood that was closer than it looked.

The Lady Wildcats lost three matches (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles) in three sets against Riverwood, a team that tied due to darkness early this season.

The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to North Hall on Monday at HIT Atlanta to fall out of the Class 4A girls’ state playoffs.

Senior Gabby Robinson finished off an amazing senior year by winning her final match 6-1, 6-0 over Natalie Oxley to finish a perfect 18-0 on the year. Freshman Olena Bikulha also wrapped up a perfect season (17-0) with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kelsey McCray.

The two teams were tied 2-2 with North Hall winning at No. 2 singles and doubles with the No. 1 doubles still on the court.

North Hall’s duo of Hannah Gibson and Kaitlyn Smith had rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to win 6-4 over Chamblee’s Kyla Manning and Kendalle Smith. The Chamblee pair shot past their counterpart 6-1 in the second set to even the match at 1 set apiece with the deciding and third set to be played.

Manning and Smith kept the momentum going into the third set going up 4-1 and one point away from taking a 5-1 lead when Gibson and Smith took advantage of the missed opportunity by the Chamblee team.

The North Hall team broke three consecutive Chamblee service games to take a 5-4 lead. Chamblee got a big win on Smith’s serve to knot the set at 5-5. Gibson pulled out a win with her serve to give North Hall a 6-5 advantage with Chamblee’s Manning to serve in the deciding game.

Manning got a big serve ace to start the game, but North Hall took the next four points for the service break and the match.

The Towers Titans’ first ever playoff run came to an end in the Sweet 16 as Pierce County took a 4-0 victory at home. Towers finished the season at 11-3.
