Students Recognized for Academic Achievements During High School
DeKalb County School District parents, teachers, principals and administrators celebrated the district’s valedictorians and salutatorians on the evening of Thursday, May 3.
“I want to share the collective power in the valedictorian and salutatorian class of 2018,” said Superintendent/CEO Dr. R. Stephen Green during the event. “We have among us National Merit Scholarship winners, Presidential Scholarship winners, Zell Miller Scholarship winners, Simon Scholarship winners, Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship winners, Gates Millennium Scholarship winners. They are a part of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, FIRST Robotics, JROTC, National Art Honor Society, Student Government, Technology Student Associations and Spanish Honor Society. They’ve won STAR Student awards, Georgia Youth Leadership awards, the Billy Mitchell Award, AP Scholar awards, Harvard Book awards … Over the past 13 years we have fostered and nurtured their growth and development. Now they are ready to continue their journey onto different colleges, careers and military. We take pride in their accomplishments and want them to know our support for them doesn’t end tonight. We, the community, will be with them and extend with them into their next journey and destination.”
Per DCSD’s board policy, the senior student with the highest cumulative grade-point average is designated a high school’s class valedictorian. The senior with the second highest grade-point average is designated the school’s salutatorian. In the event of a tie for both designations, a co-valedictorian or a co-salutatorian is named.
For the class of 2018, DCSD honored 26 valedictorians and 30 salutatorians from the district’s 22 high school facilities. This included magnet programs as well as Destiny Achievers Academy of Excellence.
Each valedictorian and salutatorian received tablet laptops courtesy of Virtucom, which partners with DCSD to provide education technology solutions.
